Music video covers, minoritised languages, and affective investments in the space of YouTube

2017

AbstractWhile interest in affective processes has led to an affective turn in cultural studies, in sociolinguistics this perspective has been given less attention. This study takes up the ‘lens of affect’ and directs it on two cases exemplifying the circulation of minoritised languages in new media spaces: music video covers from two minority-language contexts, Irish and Sámi, uploaded on YouTube. Combining recent theorising on affect with insights from sociolinguistic research, the study investigates how the YouTube users’ affective investments contribute to a (re)evaluation of the two minoritised languages, their speakers, and the related ethnic/national belongings, and how these investme…

Headquarters’ Control Capacity and the Choice of R&D Organizational Forms Abroad

2013

International audience; Recently, regarding globalization, the decentralization of R&D activities abroad by multinational companies (MNCs) has become important in developed countries. However, academic research has not given this topic sufficient attention. This paper explains how the efficiency of control and incentive mechanisms may affect the choice of organizational forms by MNCs that decentralize their R&D activities abroad. We identify five main organizational forms: wholly owned green-field subsidiary, wholly owned acquired subsidiary, joint venture, cross-licensing agreements, and unilateral licensing agreements. A questionnaire addressed to the R&D managers of American and European…

Foreign direct investment and the rule of law in Africa in the context of legal integration

2018

This essay focuses on the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and the rule of law in the context of legal integration in Africa, outside of the AfCFTA agreement. Specifically, the essay investigates the concept of the rule of law, taking into account its ‘dynamic’ side, that is the power to shape and model the structure of a state using the example of OHADA. The OHADA framework shows that the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and the rule of law is not unilateral but a ‘two-way mutual’ relationship where both actors contribute to the success of the system, adapting to each other in order to achieve their respective goals.

Design and analysis of discrete choice experiments for models with response time

2013

Settore SECS-S/02 - Statistica Per La Ricerca Sperimentale E TecnologicaA sector of conjoint analysis (experimental design in marketing research) is made of the so called choice experiments. In choice experiments respondents undergo a questionnaire which is nowadays mostly submitted through the internet. The questionnaire proposes to the respondent a sequence of choice sets each one including two or more profiles being a profile a specific combination of attribute levels. The respondent selects the preferred profile for each choice set. Responses given by a sample of respondents are analysed through suitable methods aimed to eventually find the best combination of attribute levels. One method of analysis adopts the Multinomial Logit (MLN) model. In this article the authors show the results of the MLN analysis compared with another model of analysis which uses an additional response which can be easily recorded by electronically submitted questionnaires. In practice modern survey platforms like “Qualtrics” (the one used for this work) can record the so called “response latency” i.e. the time taken by the respondent to make the choice and select the most preferred profile in the choice set. Thanks to a response latency model further refined in this work it is possible to deduce the relative weight of importance of the profiles for each choice set and respondent. This type of response can be used in place of the dichotomous choice variable in the MLN model. The two models and methods of analysis are deeply compared and it is critically discussed when it is better to use one or the other method. As a result a more reliable estimate of the optimal profile comes up implying lower risks for new investments and marketing decisions.

A macroeconomic analysis of the public investments in European combined transport

2009

Intermodal transport has been recognized as a priority by the European Union, that has defined different budget allocations of investments to improve the shifting from road to intermodal transport, which is more sustainable. In this context, the main aim of the paper is to discuss the macroeconomic effects, in terms of economic growth, welfare and trade, of these public investments for combined transport, which aspects have been neglected in literature. A multi-country computable general equilibrium model has been used. The main results have been that the European Union benefits from these investments, but at international level, USA and Japan would lose in terms of welfare. Furthermore, th…

Regional heterogeneity in the business environment: the case of Italy

2022

How do we evaluate the business environment of regional economies? This paper makes use of primary data from the World Bank’s Subnational Doing Business studies to analyze the capacity of Italian regions to facilitate entrepre- neurs in setting up and operating new businesses. By comparing data across locations and over time, we are able to identify best practices that may help policy makers in the implementation of reforms aiming at improving the business environ- ment of Italian regions and, as a result, of the country.

Territorial Gap and Territorial Distribution of Public Investments in Italy

2021

The problem of regional imbalances is a central issue in the cohesion policy debate in Europe. This paper verifies whether the territorial dynamics of in-vestment (and especially of public investment) in Italy has satisfied the principle of territorial rebalancing between the Central-Northern areas and the “Mezzogiorno” regions. The empirical evidence produced by the analy-sis of the flows of capital expenditure of investments, using the data of the territorial public accounts system, shows that the territorial gaps in recent years have widened, penalizing the regions of the South. It is necessary to think of a differential dynamic in the overall territorial flows of invest-ments in order t…
