Transarterial Chemoembolization for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Clinical Practice: Temporal Trends and Survival Outcomes of an Iterative Treatment
2022
BackgroundTransarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is one of the most frequently applied treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. In this study, we aimed at evaluating whether and how TACE application and repetition, as well as the related outcome, have changed over the last three decades in Italy.MethodsData of 7,184 patients with HCC were retrieved from the Italian Liver Cancer (ITA.LI.CA) database. Patients were divided according to the period of diagnosis in six cohorts: P1 (1988–1993), P2 (1994–1998), P3 (1999–2004), P4 (2005–2009), P5 (2010–2014), and P6 (2015–2019). All the analyses were repeated in the overall patient population and in Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BC…

Sophocles strove to bring about a greater integration of the chorus into the dramatic action at the same time as he focused the action …
Iterated Conditionals and Characterization of P-Entailment
2021
In this paper we deepen, in the setting of coherence, some results obtained in recent papers on the notion of p-entailment of Adams and its relationship with conjoined and iterated conditionals. We recall that conjoined and iterated conditionals are suitably defined in the framework of conditional random quantities. Given a family \(\mathcal {F}\) of n conditional events \(\{E_{1}|H_{1},\ldots , E_{n}|H_{n}\}\) we denote by \(\mathcal {C}(\mathcal {F})=(E_{1}|H_{1})\wedge \cdots \wedge (E_{n}|H_{n})\) the conjunction of the conditional events in \(\mathcal F\). We introduce the iterated conditional \(\mathcal {C}(\mathcal {F}_{2})|\mathcal {C}(\mathcal {F}_{1})\), where \(\mathcal {F}_{1}\)…
A Posteriori Error Bounds for Approximations of the Oseen Problem and Applications to the Uzawa Iteration Algorithm
2014
Abstract. We derive computable bounds of deviations from the exact solution of the stationary Oseen problem. They are applied to approximations generated by the Uzawa iteration method. Also, we derive an advanced form of the estimate, which takes into account approximation errors arising due to discretization of the boundary value problem, generated by the main step of the Uzawa method. Numerical tests confirm our theoretical results and show practical applicability of the estimates.
(Approximate) Low-Mode Averaging with a new Multigrid Eigensolver
2015
We present a multigrid based eigensolver for computing low-modes of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator. For the non-Hermitian case multigrid methods have already replaced conventional Krylov subspace solvers in many lattice QCD computations. Since the $\gamma_5$-preserving aggregation based interpolation used in our multigrid method is valid for both, the Hermitian and the non-Hermitian case, inversions of very ill-conditioned shifted systems with the Hermitian operator become feasible. This enables the use of multigrid within shift-and-invert type eigensolvers. We show numerical results from our MPI-C implementation of a Rayleigh quotient iteration with multigrid. For state-of-the-art lat…
On Fixed Point (Trial) Methods for Free Boundary Problems
1992
In this note we consider the trial methods for solving steady state free boundary problems. For two test examples (electrochemical machining and continuous casting) we discuss the convergence of a fixed point method. Moreover, using the techniques of shape optimization we introduce a modification of the method, which gives us superlinear convergence rate. This is also confirmed numerically.
Fuel inventory and material migration of JET main chamber plasma facing components compared over three operational periods
2020
Fuel retention and material migration results from JET ITER-like wall beryllium limiter tiles are presented for three operating periods. Ion beam analysis results support the general picture of erosion during limiter configurations with local deposition on tile ends far into the scrape off layer. Similar trends of fuel concentrations are observed in all JET operating periods; (i) low on surfaces exposed to high heat flux and erosion and (ii) higher in deposits. The pattern of fuel retention and deposition correlates with heat flux and distribution of limiter plasmas touching inner and outer limiters. The D/Be ratio in the thickest deposit is similar to 0.01. Global fuel retention attributed…
Guaranteed error bounds for a class of Picard-Lindelöf iteration methods
2013
We present a new version of the Picard-Lindelof method for ordinary dif- ¨ ferential equations (ODEs) supplied with guaranteed and explicitly computable upper bounds of an approximation error. The upper bounds are based on the Ostrowski estimates and the Banach fixed point theorem for contractive operators. The estimates derived in the paper take into account interpolation and integration errors and, therefore, provide objective information on the accuracy of computed approximations. peerReviewed
Common fixed points in generalized metric spaces
2012
Abstract We establish some common fixed point theorems for mappings satisfying a ( ψ , φ ) -weakly contractive condition in generalized metric spaces. Presented theorems extend and generalize many existing results in the literature.
