Il saggio affronta lo studio storico-artistico di un antico dipinto su tavola della Cattedrale di Monreale rappresentante la Madonna col Bambino nell'iconografia dell'Odigitria. A recent and new Republican denarius restored by Trajan is studied and discussed. The issue is extremely rare as no image of it is known so far. It was found in Carcaboso, Cáceres (Conventus Emeritensis, Lusitania), very near of the road known as Vía de la Plata, very surely in a Roman mansio.

The paper aims at underlining the relationships between the iconography of terracotta figurines and the ritual practices. As case study the pinakes depicting a group of standing/playing and dancing maidens are treated, and the whole "votive system" to which they belong is analyzed.

This article explores the development of the theme of the Life-giving Spring in Byzantine iconography. The path towards its establishment was initiated at the moment when a representation rule, an original convention was set. Thereafter, because of its diffusion in time and space, the theme became enriched by particular mentalities and sensibilities of the epochs and the communities that adopted it as a form of devotion for the Virgin Theotokos. As a result, the representations we have known so far are extremely varied.
