Superalgebras with Involution or Superinvolution and Almost Polynomial Growth of the Codimensions

2018

Let A be a superalgebra with graded involution or superinvolution ∗ and let $c_{n}^{*}(A)$, n = 1,2,…, be its sequence of ∗-codimensions. In case A is finite dimensional, in Giambruno et al. (Algebr. Represent. Theory 19(3), 599–611 2016, Linear Multilinear Algebra 64(3), 484–501 2016) it was proved that such a sequence is polynomially bounded if and only if the variety generated by A does not contain the group algebra of $\mathbb {Z}_{2}$ and a 4-dimensional subalgebra of the 4 × 4 upper-triangular matrices with suitable graded involutions or superinvolutions. In this paper we study the general case of ∗-superalgebras satisfying a polynomial identity. As a consequence we classify the varie…

Codimensions of star-algebras and low exponential growth

2020

In this paper we prove that if A is any algebra with involution * satisfying a non-trivial polynomial identity, then its sequence of *-codimensions is eventually non-decreasing. Furthermore, by making use of the *-exponent we reconstruct the only two *-algebras, up to T*-equivalence, generating varieties of almost polynomial growth. As a third result we characterize the varieties of algebras with involution whose exponential growth is bounded by 2.

Classifying Algebras with Graded Involutions or Superinvolutions with Multiplicities of their Cocharacter Bounded by One

2020

Let A be superalgebra over a field of characteristic zero and let ∗ be either a graded involution or a superinvolution defined on A. In this paper we characterize the ∗-algebras whose ∗-cocharacter has multiplicities bounded by one, showing a set of ∗-polynomial identities satisfied by such algebras.

Group identities on symmetric units

2009

Abstract Let F be an infinite field of characteristic different from 2, G a group and ∗ an involution of G extended by linearity to an involution of the group algebra FG. Here we completely characterize the torsion groups G for which the ∗-symmetric units of FG satisfy a group identity. When ∗ is the classical involution induced from g → g − 1 , g ∈ G , this result was obtained in [A. Giambruno, S.K. Sehgal, A. Valenti, Symmetric units and group identities, Manuscripta Math. 96 (1998) 443–461].

Star-fundamental algebras: polynomial identities and asymptotics

2020

We introduce the notion of star-fundamental algebra over a field of characteristic zero. We prove that in the framework of the theory of polynomial identities, these algebras are the building blocks of a finite dimensional algebra with involution ∗ * . To any star-algebra A A is attached a numerical sequence c n ∗ ( A ) c_n^*(A) , n ≥ 1 n\ge 1 , called the sequence of ∗ * -codimensions of A A . Its asymptotic is an invariant giving a measure of the ∗ * -polynomial identities satisfied by A A . It is well known that for a PI-algebra such a sequence is exponentially bounded and exp ∗ ⁡ ( A ) = lim n → ∞ c n ∗ ( A ) n \exp ^*(A)=\lim _{n\to \infty }\sqrt [n]{c_n^*(A)} can be explicitly compute…

NEW IRANIAN GRAPHIC DESIGN'S IDENTITY THROUGH THE UNITY AND THE MULTIPLICITY

2008

The meaning of the term progettare (to design) comes from the Latin projectare, to cast forward, and as an arrow must be drawn back with effort to be shot from a bow, analogously there exists in design two essential moments, the link with the past and the projection into the future. This is particularly true for Iranian graphics that sinks its strong roots into a terrain constituted by a long tradition of typography and by an equally important and ancient calligraphic tradition that moves sinuously along the curved lines of Farsi characters that compose the alphabet of the official Persian language.

The Assassination of Lieutenant Joe Petrosino: A Contested Symbol in the Mainstream and Italian-American Press in the Early 20th Century

2023

Recently, scholars have looked at the ethnic press through a social constructionist lens, examining the process through which immigrants developed a sense of identity and the role of print culture in forming “imagined communities” (Anderson). Here, I analyze the coverage of the 1909 assassination of police Lieutenant Petrosino in both mainstream and Italian-American press and popular culture. This shocking event ignited a debate over the nature and origin of the Mafia and the dangerousness of the Italian community, a debate involving discourses of racial difference, immigration restriction, and the capability of Italians to assimilate. This debate became an important arena in which Italian …

Simple Facts Concerning Nambu Algebras

1998

A class of substitution equations arising in the extension of Jacobi identity for $n$-gebras is studied and solved. Graded bracket and cohomology adapted to the study of formal deformations are presented. New identities in the case of Nambu-Lie algebras are proved. The triviality in the Gerstenhaber sense of certain deformed n-skew-symmetric brackets, satisfying the Leibniz rule with respect to a star-product, is shown for n≥ 3.

Reggae Outernational: Borders and Trans/National Identity in Jamaican Popular Music

2020

International audience; The history of post-1945 Jamaican popular music is one of constantly changing borders. Despite efforts on the part of the Jamaican state to turn reggae into Jamaica’s exclusively national music and a tourist attraction, reggae and its related subgenres remain to this day a minority culture of the underground, in Jamaica itself and in the many places around the world where it is produced and performed. Recent research on the history of Jamaican popular music suggests that it cannot easily be contained within strictly national borders. Reggae can rather be seen as a focal point around which an incipient alter/native, working-class Jamaican identity is built, both insid…
