Small $C^1$ actions of semidirect products on compact manifolds
2020
Let $T$ be a compact fibered $3$--manifold, presented as a mapping torus of a compact, orientable surface $S$ with monodromy $\psi$, and let $M$ be a compact Riemannian manifold. Our main result is that if the induced action $\psi^*$ on $H^1(S,\mathbb{R})$ has no eigenvalues on the unit circle, then there exists a neighborhood $\mathcal U$ of the trivial action in the space of $C^1$ actions of $\pi_1(T)$ on $M$ such that any action in $\mathcal{U}$ is abelian. We will prove that the same result holds in the generality of an infinite cyclic extension of an arbitrary finitely generated group $H$, provided that the conjugation action of the cyclic group on $H^1(H,\mathbb{R})\neq 0$ has no eige…
Specht property for some varieties of Jordan algebras of almost polynomial growth
2019
Abstract Let F be a field of characteristic zero. In [25] it was proved that U J 2 , the Jordan algebra of 2 × 2 upper triangular matrices, can be endowed up to isomorphism with either the trivial grading or three distinct non-trivial Z 2 -gradings or by a Z 2 × Z 2 -grading. In this paper we prove that the variety of Jordan algebras generated by U J 2 endowed with any G-grading has the Specht property, i.e., every T G -ideal containing the graded identities of U J 2 is finitely based. Moreover, we prove an analogue result about the ordinary identities of A 1 , a suitable infinitely generated metabelian Jordan algebra defined in [27] .
Graded polynomial identities and exponential growth
2009
Let $A$ be a finite dimensional algebra over a field of characteristic zero graded by a finite abelian group $G$. Here we study a growth function related to the graded polynomial identities satisfied by $A$ by computing the exponential rate of growth of the sequence of graded codimensions of $A$. We prove that the $G$-exponent of $A$ exists and is an integer related in an explicit way to the dimension of a suitable semisimple subalgebra of $A$.
Positive solutions for the Neumann p-Laplacian
2017
We examine parametric nonlinear Neumann problems driven by the p-Laplacian with asymptotically ( $$p-1$$ )-linear reaction term f(z, x) (as $$x\rightarrow +\infty $$ ). We determine the existence, nonexistence and minimality of positive solutions as the parameter $$\lambda >0$$ varies.
Perturbed eigenvalue problems for the Robin p-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential
2020
AbstractWe consider a parametric nonlinear Robin problem driven by the negativep-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential. The equation can be thought as a perturbation of the usual eigenvalue problem. We consider the case where the perturbation$$f(z,\cdot )$$f(z,·)is$$(p-1)$$(p-1)-sublinear and then the case where it is$$(p-1)$$(p-1)-superlinear but without satisfying the Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz condition. We establish existence and uniqueness or multiplicity of positive solutions for certain admissible range for the parameter$$\lambda \in {\mathbb {R}}$$λ∈Rwhich we specify exactly in terms of principal eigenvalue of the differential operator.
The Eurosky tower, by Studio Purini / Thermes, caresses the sky of Rome. From a distance, its expressive grammar seems to suggest the emergence of a new comparison between a completed architecture and the city in the making. This is placed as an element of stron…
Enriching gender in physics education research: A binary past and a complex future
2016
[This paper is part of the Focused Collection on Gender in Physics.] In this article, we draw on previous reports from physics, science education, and women’s studies to propose a more nuanced treatment of gender in physics education research (PER). A growing body of PER examines gender differences in participation, performance, and attitudes toward physics. We have three critiques of this work: (i) it does not question whether the achievements of men are the most appropriate standard, (ii) individual experiences and student identities are undervalued, and (iii) the binary model of gender is not questioned. Driven by these critiques, we propose a conception of gender that is more up to date…
PUBLIC SPACES: resources for the city or places of conflict?
2019
Public spaces, whether they be indoors or out, are an important part of cities. They are the places of everyday life that have, over time, undergone a phase of decline. Today, in fact, they are under used, unattractive, unsafe and reflect the state of health of urban centers and their inhabitants. This study investigates the quality of public spaces of some urban realities - national and international - which have become examples of sustainable urban regeneration, places of sociality and hospitality.
Second-Generation Muslim Youth Between Perception and Change: A Case Study on the Prevention of Radicalization
2020
The following article presents the results of a research-action and an online communication campaign on the prevention of radicalization of second-generation young Italian Muslims as a part of a project called “Oltre” (the Italian acronym means “Beyond”) financed by European Union. After a short presentation of the four steps of the prevention communication model PKIC, a deepening on the radicalization factors, and a focus on the research-action methodology, the results of the research on some fundamental issues like the relationship with family and the relation with media and social media of the young interviewees, are shown. Finally, in the last part of the article, the interventions carr…
Riflessività e narrazione autobiografica per una cittadinanza digitale.
2019
Within nowadays information and knowledge society, training paths are exposed to changes due to technological development. These technological hints offer a plurality of communicative tools that endlessly extend the possibility of narrating, talking about oneself, telling oneself and being recognized. In this regard, the present paper deals with Digital Storytelling, with images, music, narration and voice woven together, offering new tools to revisit the narration, intertwining multimedia, interactivity and the web, with traditional practices. All this leads us to consider digital storytelling as a sort of modern version of the ancient art of storytelling (Rule, 2010). The educational chal…
