The Țigani Community Adaptability to Changes in Rural Romania and the COVID-19 Impact
2021
Romanian rural villages are struggling to survive present times when youngsters leave for a better life in the city while elders work the land like a hundred years ago. Our paper integrates human environments research with public health preparedness, presenting the Țigani (Gypsy/Roma) ethnic group from rural Romania as an example to the world. The future security of mankind will require a new understanding of the human place in its environment. That will lead to a new society, not the most powerful or intelligent, but the one that is more adaptable to changes, with sensitive and interconnected community members. Therefore, the Țigani ethnic group that fought for its rights and flourished de…
Dagens Rødhette i en flerkulturell kontekst – mulighet for en ny identitet?
2013
The starting point for this article is the tendency in recent Norwegian children’s and Ya fiction to thematize cultural encounters in an increasingly multicultural and globalized world. The picturebook Little Miss Eye Flap ( Skylappjenta , 2009) written by the Pakistani-Norwegian author and actor Iram Haq and illustrated by Endre Skandfer, presents a modern version of traditional folktales such as Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel . However, the traditional structure of home – away – home gives particular emphasis to the phase of homelessness, not providing any safe return to harmony. This condition of liminal space between cultures is discussed in light of the concepts of reflexive ident…
Intercultural Workplace Communication
2017
The workplace is a highly meaningful context for intercultural communication where persons who come from different countries, identify with different ethnic groups or speak different languages get to collaborate and develop relationships with one another. Needless to say, interpersonal communication in the workplace has always been a primary area of interest for intercultural communication research. Early scholarship focused on the preparation of U.S. military personnel, diplomats, business people, and missionaries for overseas assignments. However, the increasing pluralization of the social landscape has bolstered research endeavors. These days, the scope of intercultural workplace communi…

Suomalaisten maahanmuutto Pohjois-Amerikkaan jakautuu useaan eri vaiheeseen. Köyhistä agraarioloista tulleet suomalaiset olivat kovia tekemään työtä ja asettuivat usein seuduille, jotka tarjosivat heille tuttua työtä, esimerkiksi maanviljelyksen ja metsätyön parissa. Näille alueille muodostui merkkittäviä suomalaiskeskittymiä, jotka mahdollistivat suomalaisen kulttuuriperimän säilymisen vuosikymmeniä. Tutkimuksemme keskittyy suomalaisuuden ilmenemiseen ja kulttuuri-identiteetin rakentumiseen amerikansuomalaisten keskuudessa 1980-luvulla. Tapaustuskimuksemme tavoite on selvittää, miten tietyt amerikansuomalaiset mieltävät suomalaisuuden, ja miten he rakentavat kulttuuri-identiteettiään. Tutk…

Relevance and Role of Contemporary Architecture Preservation—Assessing and Evaluating Architectural Heritage as a Contemporary Landscape: A Study Cas…
2023
Since WWII to the 2000s, numerous masters of contemporary architecture have contributed to the construction of new landscapes with their works; therefore, these places have become part of a changing landscape and of the multifaceted process of landscape generation. Nevertheless, during this fifty-year period, capitalism has led to the destruction of many existing landscapes, and the policies of protection and preservation have often entailed a process of musealization. In 2000, the European Landscape Convention adopted a new common-grounded definition of landscape, integrating a wide set of cultural approaches and disciplinary topics. Starting from the assumption that contemporary architect…
Turning Right/Turning Left? : A Neoclassical Socioeconomic Query of the Arts Signaled by Museum and Branding in Finland
2016
ABSTRACTThe Guggenheim Helsinki Plan indicated a wishful turn of the arts and culture in Finland from the socio-democratic tradition of a welfare society towards a further neoliberalism. Following the Finnish historical timeline and from a museological viewpoint, this article reviews how national identity was built through the arts, which later integrated into formal and informal education to enhance human capital. This instrumental view now promotes the idea of useful art to fuel an innovation economy of advanced technology. Considering embarking on the intricate platform of arts, economics, and finance through Guggenheim, rethinking the contemporary art market mechanism may prove to be be…
Transmission processes of indigenous Pedi music
2017
There has been unsatisfactory integration of traditional music into education, despite the fact that the Ministry of Education advocates its use, stating that education should ‘preserve South Africa’s cultural practice; develop an appreciation for the practice of one’s culture; and develop a sense of respect for other people’s culture’. South Africa is in need of a music education philosophy that is culturally embedded, cognisant of the societal context in which it is to function, and informed by South African ideas and philosophy of life. This study entails sourcing the Ethnomusicological and Anthropological focus in musicology for purposes of providing a better understanding on music and …
