This text is part of the author’s research on the literary culture of the nineteenth-century Upper Silesia. The author shows that at the forefront of modern Europe (at the beginning of industrialization and urbanization of the continent) the autochthon writers of Upper Silesia undertook actions aimed at fostering cultural awareness amongst their compatriots, who were considered to belong to a national minority, in order to instil patriotic feelings in them. In the current post-colonial discourse their struggles are recognized as the “voice of the periphery”. Humans make efforts to manage their lives, and they do this by setting goals and making decisions. When they commit to their decisions, they construct their identity. This research aimed to study young people’s personal goal contents and appraisals, and how these constructs were related to identity and career identity development and subjective well-being. The aim of this paper was to analyze how cultural identification, perceived discrimination and the sense of community are related to life satisfaction among foreign partners in intercultural families. The study compared 105 and 95 foreign partners in mixed families resident in Italy and Spain, respectively. The phenomenon in both countries displays similar sociodemographic aspects. Authoress of the article analyses personal identity on an ethnic borderland. Personal identity among other things is an ability to answer following questions: „Who am I, Where am I from?”. Borderland is multiethnic, multicultural and multilanguage area, where defining an unit is especially difficult in the period of nationalistic conflicts. Authoress is considering personal identity on example of Óndra Łysohorsky – Czech regional poet of Silesia, who in the thirties of 20th century was declaring controversial opinion about existence of Lachian nation speaking Lachian language.
