2017
One of the most recent and promising developments in radiotherapy dosimetry was the introduction of 3D radiationsensitive gels. These gels present tissue equivalent composition and density, so they also serve as phantoms, and their response is largely independent of radiation quality and dose rate. Some gels are infused with ferrous sulfate and rely on the radiation-induced oxidation of ferrous ions to ferric ions (Fricke-gel). In this work Fricke gel dosimeters produced with a matrix of poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (GTA) were analyzed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This work focused on the analysis of the temporal diffusion of ferric ions through PVA-GT…
Diffusion and sensitivity characteristics of a chemically cross-linked PVA-Fricke gel dosimeter
2016
Introduction: Current radiotherapy techniques implement treatment plans based on volumetric distributions of dose with complex shapes and sharp gradients. The agreement between these plans and the dose that is truly delivered is very challenging to verify. Thus, there is the need for a dosimetric system that is truly three dimensional, sensitive to radiation in each point and tissue equivalent. In this framework, great interest is encountered by radio-chromic gel dosimeters. In order to address the limitations of gels based on natural matrices, some investigators have proposed dosimeters based on poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) made by freezing-thawing cycles. Even though these gels have a low dif…

Cartografia archeologica di base del sito di Elaiussa Sebaste da immagini satellitari ad alta risoluzione geometrica
2009
This paper sets out the research work carried out by the Unit of Palermo University within the FIRB 2003 National Programme, directed to the compilation of an archaeological base map of the Roman site at Elaiussa Sebaste. The employed methodology is based on the use of high resolution satellite imagery; particularly, a QuickBird image was used. A GPS survey was carried out in September 2008, aimed at determination of ground control points and spot heights used to georeference the image and to construct the DTM respectively. At last a digital orthophoto of the archaeological area was compiled from the acquired data.
Outcome of LR-3 and LR-4 observations without arterial phase hyperenhancement at Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI follow-up
2020
Objective: The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze the outcome of LR-3 and LR-4 without arterial phase hyperenhancement (APHE), and identify which features could predict LR-5 progression on serial Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI follow-up. Methods: Forty-nine cirrhotic patients with 55 LR-3 and 19 LR-4 without APHE were evaluated. Observations were classified as decreased, stable or increased in category at follow-up. Observation size and LI-RADS major and ancillary features were evaluated. Results: Seventeen/fifty-five (31%) LR-3 and 8/19 (42%) LR-4 progressed to LR-5 at follow-up. Baseline LI-RADS major and ancillary features were not significantly different among LR-3 and LR-4. A d…
Magnetic resonance imaging of the cirrhotic liver in the era of gadoxetic acid.
2015
Gadoxetic acid improves detection and characterization of focal liver lesions in cirrhotic patients and can estimate liver function in patients undergoing liver resection. The purpose of this article is to describe the optimal gadoxetic acid study protocol for the liver, the unique characteristics of gadoxetic acid, the differences between gadoxetic acid and extra-cellular gadolium chelates, and the differences in phases of enhancement between cirrhotic and normal liver using gadoxetic acid. We also discuss how to obtain and recognize an adequate hepatobiliary phase.
Enhancing capsule in hepatocellular carcinoma: intra-individual comparison between CT and MRI with extracellular contrast agent
2021
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the value of contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) to that of magnetic resonance imaging obtained with extracellular contrast agent (ECA-MRI) for the diagnosis of a tumor capsule in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using histopathologic findings as the standard of reference. Materials and methods: This retrospective study included patients with pathologically-proven resected HCCs with available preoperative contrast-enhanced CT and ECA-MRI examinations. Two blinded radiologists independently reviewed contrast-enhanced CT and ECA-MRI examinations to assess the presence of an enhancing capsule. The histopathological analysis of resected spe…
Gadoxetate disodium-enhanced magnetic resonance cholangiography for the noninvasive detection of an active bile duct leak after laparoscopic cholecys…
2010
Abstract We report a case of an endoscopically confirmed biliary leak of the common hepatic duct after laparoscopic cholecystectomy that was prospectively diagnosed on gadoxetate disodium-enhanced magnetic resonance cholangiography. Whereas dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance images during the early vascular phases helped to rule out the causes of possible complications such as seroma, hematoma, or abdominal abscess, delayed hepatobiliary phase imaging was crucial for unequivocal diagnosis and location of the biliary leak. The diagnosis prompted therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiography whereby a polytetrafluoroethylene-covered nitinol stent graft was successfully placed to…
