Modification of LiF structure by irradiation with swift heavy ions under oblique incidence

2013

The structural modifications of LiF irradiated with swift heavy ions under oblique angles have been investigated using AFM, SEM, chemical etching, nanoindentation and optical absorption spectroscopy. LiF crystals were irradiated under incidence angles of 30 and 70 degrees with 2.2 GeV Au (fluence 57?l011 ions-cm2) and 150 MeV Kr ions (fluence 1012?1014 ions?cm?2). Structural study on sample cross-sections shows that two damage regions ? (1) nanostructured zone and (2) dislocation ? rich zone, which are typical for irradiations at normal incidence, appear also in samples irradiated under oblique angles. However in the latter case a more complex structure is formed that leads to stronger ion-…

Thickness and temperature dependent structure of Cd arachidate Langmuir-Blodgett films

1992

Abstract The structure of monolayers of Cd arachidate on water and on solid support, and the thickness dependent changes when building up a multilayer via the LB technique are studied by means of grazing incidence diffraction of X-ray. In monolayers the perpendicularly oriented amphiphilic molecules are arranged in a hexagonal lattice, whereas for thicker layers (even for three layers) they crystallize in an orthorhombic unit cell with a reduced molecular are ( A = 18.2 A 2 ) compared to that of the monolayer ( A = 19.7 A 2 ). In-plane diffraction measurements with wave vector transfer perpendicular to the surface (rod scans) could prove for multilayers a maximum tilt angle of 2°. The data …

Oblique incidence and polarization effects in coupled gratings.

2012

Oblique incidence and polarization orientation of the input beam have dramatic effects on the spectral response of coupled dielectric waveguide gratings. Coupled gratings with small periodic perturbations can be described as a problem of two coupled resonances at strictly normal incidence, but we find that the device involves four coupled resonances when oblique incidence and polarization effects are included in the analysis. Very small deviations from normal incidence change qualitatively the spectral response and four peaks are observed, whereas only two peaks are present at normal incidence. Polarization misalignments produce a decrease of the reflectance of the resonances at normal inci…

Treatment of grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering data taken above the critical angle

2001

The equations taking into account refraction at the sample surface in grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) when the angle between the incoming beam and the sample surface is slightly larger than the critical angle are derived and discussed. It is demonstrated that the refraction of both the incoming and the scattered beam at the sample surface affects the GISAXS pattern and that, when a planar bidimensional detector perpendicular to the incoming beam is used, the effect depends on the azimuthal detector angle. The smearing of the pattern depending on the size of the illuminated sample area in grazing incidence is estimated by simulations with Cauchy functions of different…

Menopause and diabetes: EMAS clinical guide

2018

Abstract Introduction Whether menopause increases the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) independently of ageing has been a matter of debate. Controversy also exists about the benefits and risks of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) in women with T2DM. Aims To summarise the evidence on 1) the effect of menopause on metabolic parameters and the risk of T2DM, 2) the effect of T2DM on age at menopause, 3) the effect of MHT on the risk of T2DM, and 4) the management of postmenopausal women with T2DM. Materials and methods Literature review and consensus of experts’ opinions. Results and conclusion Metabolic changes during the menopausal transition include an increase in and the central redis…

Youth Transition from School to Work in Spain

2001

Using a data set drawn from the Encuesta Socio-Demográfica conducted by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística in 1991, we analyze the labor market entrance of Spanish school leavers and the match between education and work at the early stages of working life. The empirical evidence shows that human capital exerts a strong influence on the duration of unemployment. With regard to the job match between education and work we find that young workers are more likely to be underutilized compared to their adult co-workers. Regression results indicate that people with higher education have, all else being equal, a lower probability of being overeducated and a shorter lenght of unemployment. They al…

Study of the angular acceptance of surface plasmon Bragg mirrors

2007

Surface plasmon based photonic devices are promising candidates for highly integrated optics. A surface plasmon (SP) is basically an electromagnetic wave confined in the interface between a metal and a dielectric, and is due to the interaction of the electromagnetic field with the surface bounded electron charges in the metal. A SP can propagate along the interface where it is confined (the propagation length being tens of micrometers in the visible range), but its associated electromagnetic field decreases exponentially in the perpendicular direction, in such a way that this vertical confinement makes SP very attractive for the design of optical devices in coplanar geometry. An important e…

Decrease in annual incidence of acute coronary syndrome and restructuring of coronary care in Latvia

2014

Abstract Introduction Improvement in coronary heart disease prevention and treatment, as well as availability of coronary care facilities, is important for the reduction of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) incidence. Centralized acute coronary care system is crucial to provide optimal hospitalization and management algorithm for ACS patients. Aim The aim of the current report was to assess the annual incidence of ACS and the quality of acute coronary care in Latvia. Methods The Data from The Latvian Registry of Acute Coronary Syndromes were analyzed covering the time period from 2005 to 2010. Results Since the year 2005 the annual incidence of hospitalization due to ACS decreased significantly…
