Structured methodology for selection of maintenance key performance indicators: Application to an oil refinery plant
2017
The novel contribution of the work is the proposal of a structured multi-step methodology that may support the Decision Maker (DM) in the measurement of maintenance performance by means of Maintenance Key Performance Indicators (MKPIs). To this aim, a multi-level hierarchical framework able to synthesize the most meaningful aspects affecting the maintenance results is designed. Then, MKPIs are selected from the literature, assigned to the hierarchical framework and ranked by an Analytic Hierarchy Process-based approach with incomplete comparison matrices. A mathematical model is finally formulated to select the optimal set of MKPIs. The methodology is implemented in an oil refinery plant an…
La misurazione della performance accademica: un'analisi applicata al "costo standard per studente in corso"
2017
The recent introduction of the “standard cost per regular student”, as a criterion adopted by the Italian Ministry of Education to measure public university performance, implies a deep afterthought of those methods underlying the design of performance management and measurement systems in Italian universities. This has also to be extended – through a systemic perspective – to the evaluation of the Third Mission activities influencing the corresponding socio-economic context. With the intent to support a diagnostic activity related to the academic performance, this paper aims at introducing a system of output-outcome indicators – within a consistent framework – oriented to measure the driver…
Unpacking Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) performances through the institutional logics lens
2019
In the current knowledge-based economy, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are called to play different interconnected roles related to triple university missions. Alongside the two traditional missions of teaching and research, HEIs have experienced the emergence of the so-called “third mission”, which sees HEIs as knowledge-based agents part of ecosystems of public institutions, companies and citizens oriented to coknowledge creation. Finding a balance between the traditional missions and the third mission can be a serious challenge. For this reason, HEIs need to revise their objectives, strategies and performance indicator systems to plan, monitor and assess their social, cultural, and…
Testing for local structure in spatiotemporal point pattern data
2017
The detection of clustering structure in a point pattern is one of the main focuses of attention in spatiotemporal data mining. Indeed, statistical tools for clustering detection and identification of individual events belonging to clusters are welcome in epidemiology and seismology. Local second-order characteristics provide information on how an event relates to nearby events. In this work, we extend local indicators of spatial association (known as LISA functions) to the spatiotemporal context (which will be then called LISTA functions). These functions are then used to build local tests of clustering to analyse differences in local spatiotemporal structures. We present a simulation stud…
A BoD Composite Indicator to Measure the Italian “Sole 24 Ore” Quality of Life
2023
The measure of Quality of Life (QoL) is still a topic widely discussed in literature. In Italy, the newspaper “Il Sole 24 Ore” publishes a famous ranking that highlights strong disparities among provinces. In this paper, “Il Sole 24 Ore” and BoD-DEA methods are compared in order to show how different types of normaliza- tion and aggregation significantly influence the results making these rankings very fragile and questionable.
Didattica e differenze di genere in alunni di 8-12 anni
2013
Characteristics of young offenders depending on the type of crime
2015
The aim of this study is to define a profile of juvenile offenders depending on the type of crime (against property or against persons), according to several socio-demographic variables, and a number of indicators of juvenile risk. Participants were 395 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18 with a criminal record in the juvenile court over a two-year follow-up period. Results showed that in property-related offences the offender is more likely to be male, from an Eastern European country, and with inconsistent parenting. On the other hand, crimes against persons would be committed mostly by girls, Latin American or African juveniles, and with individual factors such as aggressive behavi…
Soil quality indicators as affected by a long term barley-maize and maize cropping systems
2011
Most soil studies aim a better characterization of the system through indicators. In the present study nematofauna and soil structure were chosen as indicators to be assess soil health as related to agricultural practices. The field research was carried out on the two fodder cropping systems continuous maize (CM, Zea mays L.) and a 3-year rotation of silage-maize – silage-barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with Italian ryegrass (R3) and grain-maize maintained in these conditions for 18 years. Each crop system was submitted to two management options: 1) the high input level (H), done as a conventional tillage, 2) the low input level (L), where the tillage was replaced by harrowing and the…
Key Biochemical Attributes to Assess Soil Ecosystem Sustainability
2011
Soil is not a renewable resource, at least within the human timescale. In general, any anthropic exploitation of soils tends to disturb or divert them from a more “natural” development which, by definition, represents the best comparison term for measuring the relative shift from soil sustainability. The continuous degradation of soil health and quality due to abuse of land potentiality or intensive management occurs since decades. Soil microbiota, being ‘the biological engine of the Earth’, provides pivotal services in the soil ecosystem functioning. Hence, management practices protecting soil microbial diversity and resilience, should be pursued. Besides, any abnormal change in rate of in…
Temporal evolution of some mortality indicators: Application to Spanish data
2012
[EN] In Spain, as in other developed countries, significant changes in mortality patterns have occurred during the 20th and 21st centuries. One reflection of these changes is life expectancy, which has improved in this period, although the robustness of this indicator prevents these changes from being of the same order as those for the probability of death. If, moreover, we bear in mind that life expectancy offers no information as to whether this improvement is the same for different age groups, it is important and necessary to turn to other mortality indicators whose past and future evolution in Spain we are going to study. These indicators are applied to Spanish mortality data for the pe…
