Assessment of Researchers Through Bibliometric Indicators: The Area of Information and Library Science in Spain as a Case Study (2001–2015)

2018

Research activities are subject to constant processes of evaluation, which increasingly include the use of bibliometric indicators to support decision-making. This paper presents a model for the individual evaluation of different facets of researchers' work and discusses the interest in using “control” parameters to identify deviations suggesting inappropriate conduct. The proposed model is illustrated through an empirical example that analyzes the activity of Spanish researchers in the area of Library and Information Science. There are important differences among the most productive authors, and in many cases, there is no association between the degree of participation in high-impact journ…

Tourism statistics and unobserved tourism: empirical evidences in Sicily

2013

Despite its strategic importance, accurately measuring visitor attendance has been a challenging and problematic exercise for tourism managers for decades. Consequently, the primary aim of tourism statistics of accurately quantify tourism flows has been only partially achieved; indeed at a lower territorial scale tourism statistics appear less precise and accurate. The aim of this paper is: to introduce the concept of unobserved tourism, by highlighting the main limits of official statistical systems (with a special focus on the European statistical system on tourism statistics; to formalize a theoretical model in which tourism nights and trips in a given destination are decomposed intoobse…

Progress towards sustainable agriculture – Drivers of change

2021

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 calls for global action to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture”. Meeting this challenge requires global partnerships to support more productive, nutritious and equitable food systems, while helping to conserve environmental resources and reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions responsible for global climate change. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) offers a global vision for a more sustainable agriculture that encompasses economic, social and environmental dimensions of food and agriculture systems. This technical study examines the key factors driving changes in…

OUTSTANDING DEVELOPMENTS IN THE ROMANIAN BANKING SYSTEM

2011

The Romanian banking system, after 1990, went through several stages in order to adapt to a new economic context, respectively to the necessary adjustment to the transition from centralized economy to market economy, and then, after the year 2000, adapting to meet the European Union’s membership requirements, and later, after 2007, adapting to adopt the euro currency. These events to which the Romanian banking system must adapt are known events. To which, however, join contingencies related to the onset and manifestation of the international financial crisis, events with direct impact on the banking system in Romania that determined changes both in the banking regulations, and in the struct…

Quality of Inclusive Educational System for Work with Students with Autism Different Needs in Italy

2015

The need for realization of inclusive education, which is the basis of a sustainable education, will require new challenges in the Education System. The system used in Italy can be used as an example. Italy passed avant-garde laws concerning the integration and inclusion of special needs students into the general school system already more than thirty years ago, in the 1970s. However, even after all this time and experience, there are still unresolved problems, which testifies to the complexities of the matter. This research offers an insight into the quality of the existing Italian inclusive education system specifically in relation to students with autism. Thereby it hopes to provide educ…

The use of energy in the Mediterranean fishing catching sector. A Sicilian perspective

2010

This article address an issue of paramount importance in the Mediterranean area, that is the efficient use of energy and sustainability of fishing sector. A recent study concerning the situation of Fishery and Aquaculture in Sicily highlighted that the Sicilian fishing system requires a bigger amount of energy than the typical Italian or European situation, in order of getting the product available to the market. On the other hand this involves an higher level of environmental pollution, for a given quantity of catch. One of the main findings is that there is a need for a clear, scientifically-founded panorama of the situation and that further studies should be undertaken to provide fishing…

Badania nad potencjalnym wykorzystaniem pluskwiaków różnoskrzydłych (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) w bioindykacji i monitoringu przyrodniczym

2023

This paper presented the results of the studies on true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) alongside evaluating their potential usefulness in biomonitoring and bioindication. The studies were carried out in May and August of 2017. Three research sites situated at various distances from the full-scale plants (Grupa Azoty Zakłady Azotowe Kędzierzyn SA, Zakłady Chemiczne Petrochemia-Blachownia SA, Zakłady Koksownicze ArcelorMittal Poland Zdzieszowice) and the control area out of reach of the emission of chemical pollutants, i.e. the meadows in the Chrząstowice area of Natura 2000, have been selected for studies. All studied meadows were classified within the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class. As a resu…

Early Effects of No-Till Use on Durum Wheat (Triticum durum Desf.): Productivity and Soil Functioning Vary between Two Contrasting Mediterranean Soils

2022

The diffusion of no-tillage (NT) is to be encouraged because of the benefits it can provide in terms of improving soil fertility and counteracting global warming and climate change as part of climate-smart agriculture practices. However, the introduction of this management can be difficult, especially in the first years of application, and can lead to unpredictable yield results depending on the soil type. Therefore, the aim of this experiment was to evaluate the early effect of NT use, compared to the conventional mouldboard ploughing (CT), on two different soils, a clay-loam (GAL) and a sandy-clay-loam soil (SMA), by monitoring a set of 43 different soil and plant variables that were expe…
