Investigating the Impact of Radiation-Induced Soft Errors on the Reliability of Approximate Computing Systems

2020

International audience; Approximate Computing (AxC) is a well-known paradigm able to reduce the computational and power overheads of a multitude of applications, at the cost of a decreased accuracy. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have proven to be particularly suited for AxC because of their inherent resilience to errors. However, the implementation of AxC techniques may affect the intrinsic resilience of the application to errors induced by Single Events in a harsh environment. This work introduces an experimental study of the impact of neutron irradiation on approximate computing techniques applied on the data representation of a CNN.

Light-induced opening and closing of the intramolecular hydrogen bond in glyoxylic acid.

2013

The isomerization process of glyoxylic acid (GA) conformers and their complexes with a water molecule were studied in a low temperature argon matrix. The research target was to understand how starting conformation and complexation affects the near-IR (NIR) induced conformer interconversion. The most stable GA conformer (Tc) is characterized by an intramolecular hydrogen bond, and it is found to undergo light-induced conformer interconversion slower than the open (Tt) conformer. Upon complexation with water, the isomerization processes slow down in the case of the Tc conformer, whereas for the Tt-based complex the influence of water is negligible on the isomerization process.

Rydberg excitation of cold atoms inside a hollow core fiber

2017

We report on a versatile, highly controllable hybrid cold Rydberg atom fiber interface, based on laser cooled atoms transported into a hollow core Kagom\'{e} crystal fiber. Our experiments are the first to demonstrate the feasibility of exciting cold Rydberg atoms inside a hollow core fiber and we study the influence of the fiber on Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) signals. Using a temporally resolved detection method to distinguish between excitation and loss, we observe two different regimes of the Rydberg excitations: one EIT regime and one regime dominated by atom loss. These results are a substantial advancement towards future use of our system for quantum simulat…

Patrimonio culturale e tecnologia: un incontro ancora da valorizzare

2020

Today, many factors are driving cultural institutions to adopt digitization strategies. For some of them, as organizations in charge of monument care, historical or archaeological museums and heritage parks, this might be critical. Indeed, making available off-site experiences of heritage places, for instance by augmented reality and/or video games, fuels polyvalent and potentially contradictory dynamics. They lay at the intersection of three main dimensions: understanding how cultural heritage and technology interact; which attitudes people in charge of cultural heritage bear, and how tourist destinations are built and promoted. The paper combines information about the evolution of the lit…

A Light-Induced Vinylogous Nazarov-Type Cyclization

2016

The first examples of a photochemically induced vinylogous Nazarov-type cyclization forming a cycloheptadienone core are described. The reaction can be included in a three-step cascade consisting of a photochemical isoxazole-azirine ring contraction, cobalt(II)-catalyzed ring expansion, and the photochemical cyclization. Furthermore, the first representative of the hitherto unknown 1-azatricyclo[2.2.0.0(2,6)]hexanes has been identified as a side product of the azirine formation.

Effect of actively targeted copolymer coating on solid tumors eradication by gold nanorods-induced hyperthermia.

2020

Efforts in the field of anticancer therapy are increasingly focusing on the development of localized and selective treatments. Photothermal therapy (PTT) can lead to a spatially confined death of cancer cells, exploiting an increasing in temperature generated after UV-NIR irradiation of peculiar materials. Herein, a new actively targeted gold-based drug delivery system, named PHEA-LA-Fol-AuNRs/Iri, was explored for hyperthermia and chemotherapy colon cancer treatment. Gold nanorods were stabilized using a folate-derivative of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA-LA-PEG-FA) as coating agent and then loaded with the antineoplastic drug irinotecan (Iri). The efficacy of empty and i…

A metabolomics cell-based approach for anticipating and investigating drug-induced liver injury

2016

AbstractIn preclinical stages of drug development, anticipating potential adverse drug effects such as toxicity is an important issue for both saving resources and preventing public health risks. Current in vitro cytotoxicity tests are restricted by their predictive potential and their ability to provide mechanistic information. This study aimed to develop a metabolomic mass spectrometry-based approach for the detection and classification of drug-induced hepatotoxicity. To this end, the metabolite profiles of human derived hepatic cells (i.e., HepG2) exposed to different well-known hepatotoxic compounds acting through different mechanisms (i.e., oxidative stress, steatosis, phospholipidosis…

Microregional distributions of glucose, lactate, ATP and tissue pH in experimental tumours upon local hyperthermia and/or hyperglycaemia

1993

Microregional distributions of glucose, lactate and ATP concentrations as well as tissue pH values were determined in subcutaneous rat tumours during normothermia and normoglycaemia, and upon local hyperthermia (HT) and/or hyperglycaemia (HG). Experiments were performed in order to investigate whether, and to what extent, these adjuvant therapeutic measures applied alone or in combination can modify the bioenergetic and metabolic status, parameters that are known to markedly influence the therapeutic response of tumours to heat. Local HT was performed in a saline bath (44 degrees C/2 h) and HG was induced by i.v. infusion of glucose for 2.5 h (blood glucose levels during heating: 35-40 mM).…

Acute changes of systemic parameters in tumour-bearing rats, and of tumour glucose, lactate, and ATP levels upon local hyperthermia and/or hyperglyca…

1991

Arterial blood pressure and relevant parameters of the arterial blood (O2 and CO2 tensions, pH, haematocrit, serum electrolytes and osmolality) were determined in tumour-bearing rats upon local hyperthermia (HT) and/or hyperglycaemia (HG). Tumour heating was performed in a saline bath (44 degrees C) for 120 min; hyperglycaemia was induced by i.v. infusion of 40% glucose solution for 150 min [blood glucose levels: 35-40 mM during heating; total amount of glucose: 1.19 g/100 g body wt.; infusion rates: 0.31 ml (100 g body wt.)-1 min-1 for 2 min, 0.02 ml (100 g body wt.)-1 min-1 for 88 min, and 0.01 ml (100 g body wt.)-1 min-1 for 60 min]. Laser Doppler flux and tissue oxygenation of experimental tumours upon local hyperthermia and/or hyperglycaemia

1992

Laser Doppler fluxmetry and oxygen partial pressure (pO2) histography have been applied to investigate the acute effects of hyperthermia (HT) and/or hyperglycaemia (HG) on microcirculatory function and tissue oxygenation of subcutaneous rat tumours growing on the dorsum of the hind foot. The experiments were performed to test whether, and to what extent, the two adjunct treatment modalities applied alone or in combination can modify these therapeutically relevant parameters. Local HT was performed in a saline bath (44 degrees C) for 2 h; HG was induced by i.v. infusion of 40% glucose solution for 2.5 h (blood glucose levels: 35-40 mM during heating).
