A simulation study for assessing the impact of energy storage systems for Fast Reserve with additional synthetic inertia control on the Continental E…
2022
This article shows the results of a simulation study on the application of battery storage systems for providing fast frequency regulation (the so-named Fast Reserve) with additional synthetic inertia control. The aim of the study is to assess the impact of the extension of the regulation provided by the FRUs to all the Continental Europe synchronous grid, with the same power proportions of the first Italian FRU auction. The simulations are conducted in two different scenarios: a base one related to 2020 and a future one related to 2040 and based on ENTSO-E projections for load and generation. The results show that, for the reference incident of 3000 MW, the frequency quality parameters in …
Surface soil water content estimation based on thermal inertia and Bayesian smoothing
2014
Soil water content plays a critical role in agro-hydrology since it regulates the rainfall partition between surface runoff and infiltration and, the energy partition between sensible and latent heat fluxes. Current thermal inertia models characterize the spatial and temporal variability of water content by assuming a sinusoidal behavior of the land surface temperature between subsequent acquisitions. Such behavior implicitly supposes clear sky during the whole interval between the thermal acquisitions; but, since this assumption is not necessarily verified even if sky is clear at the exact epoch of acquisition, , the accuracy of the model may be questioned due to spatial and temporal varia…
Thermal inertia modeling for soil surface water content estimation: A laboratory experiment
2012
We are proposing a new method for estimating soil surface water content from thermal inertia distributions retrieved from visible–near infrared (VISNIR)and thermal infrared (TIR) images. A drying experiment was conducted on three fi ne-textured soils while acquiring multispectral VIS-NIR and TIR images. Simultaneous measurements of soil water content and thermal inertia were conducted by the thermogravimetric method and the heat pulse technique, respectively. Direct measurements were used to test the thermal inertia approach proposed by Murray and Verhoef that requires only knowledge of soil porosity and can be easily inverted to derive soil water content from thermal inertia. For the three…
In-beam spectroscopic study of Cf244
2018
The ground-state rotational band of the neutron-deficient californium (Z = 98) isotope 244Cf was identified for the first time and measured up to a tentative spin and parity of I I-pi = 20(+). The observation of the rotational band indicates that the nucleus is deformed. The kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia were deduced from the measured gamma-ray transition energies. The behavior of the dynamic moment of inertia revealed an up-bend due to a possible alignment of coupled nucleons in high-j orbitals starting at a rotational frequency of about (h) over bar (omega) = 0.20 MeV. The results were compared with the systematic behavior of the even-even N = 146 isotones as well as with avail…
An original control strategy of storage systems for the frequency stability of autonomous grids with renewable power generation
2021
This work examines the operation of the autonomous power system of a geographical island assuming the integration of significant generation shares from renewable energy sources and the installation of the required storage systems. The frequency stability of the system is investigated considering different operating conditions, in terms of load demand and renewable power generation. The main focus of the work is an original control strategy specifically designed for power converters interfacing storage units to the grid. The proposed strategy is based on an extended frequency droop control, which selects specific droop settings depending on the operating mode—charge or discharge—of the stora…

Introducing Thermal Inertia for Monitoring Snowmelt Processes With Remote Sensing
2019
Thermal inertia has been successfully used in remote sensing applications that span from geology, geomorphology to hydrology. In this paper, we propose the use of thermal inertia for describing snow dynamics. Two different formulations of thermal inertia were tested using experimental and simulated data related to snowpack dynamics. Experimental data were acquired between 2012 and 2017 from an automatic weather station located in the western Italian Alps at 2,160 m. Simulations were obtained using the one‐dimensional multilayer Crocus model. Results provided evidences that snowmelt phases can be recognized, and average snowpack density can be estimated reasonably well from thermal inertia o…
Mathematical model for the adsorption-induced nonlocal frequency shift in adatoms-nanobeam system
2017
Abstract This paper models and investigates the resonance frequency shift induced by the adsorption phenomena for an adatoms-nanobeam system including the small scale effect as well as rotary inertia and shear distortion effects. The Lennard-Jones (6–12) type potential is used to determine the adsorption-induced energy owing van der Waals (vdW) interaction mechanism between adatom-adatom and adatom-substrate. The small scale effect is introduced by using Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory while the explicit expressions of inertia moment and shear force are derived from the standard Timoshenko beam equations in which the residual stress effect is accounted as an additive axial load. Numeri…

Abstract In both the OECD Code and the EC Directive for testing dual-pillar front-mounted roll-over protection structures for narrow track width tractors, a non-continuous rolling preliminary test in case of lateral overturning is provided. This test can be simulated with a computer programme. The role of the tyres (and also of the rims) in the lateral overturning of narrow tractors is very important. Frequently the same tractor can be alternatively equipped with four, five, or more different tyre combinations, which can vary its total mass, width, centre of gravity position and moment of inertia about its longitudinal axis. According to the Standards the preliminary test must be carried ou…
Dryland vegetation pattern dynamics driven by inertial effects and secondary seed dispersal
2022
This manuscript tackles the study of vegetation pattern dynamics driven by inertial effects and secondary seed dispersal. To achieve this goal, an hyperbolic extension of the classical parabolic Klausmeier model of vegetation, generally used to predict the formation of banded vegetation along the slopes of semiarid environments, has been here considered together with an additional advective term mimicking the downslope motion of seeds. Linear stability analyses have been carried out to inspect the dependence of the wave instability locus on the model parameters, with particular emphasis on the role played by inertial time and seed advection speed. Moreover, periodic travelling wave solution…
