Improvement in both in-vitro fertilization/embryo transfer (IVF/ET) and gamete intra-Fallopian transfer (GIFT) procedures have led to a progressive extension of their use far beyond the indications represented by tubal problems. One of the most important examples of this is in the field of male infertility. Some researchers claim that IVF/ET is more efficient on the basis of the 'fertilization evidence', while others prefer the GIFT technique, stressing that as its results are clearly so much better that it should be used in all cases.

Androglobin, a chimeric mammalian globin, is required for male fertility

AbstractSpermatogenesis is a highly specialised process, involving multiple dedicated pathways and regulatory check-points. Defects ultimately lead to male sub-fertility or sterility, and numerous aspects of mammalian sperm formation remain unknown. The predominant expression of the latest globin family member, androglobin (Adgb) in mammalian testis tissue prompted us to assess its physiological function in spermatogenesis. Adgb knockout mice display male infertility, reduced testis weight, impaired maturation of elongating spermatids, abnormal sperm shape and ultrastructural defects in microtubule and mitochondrial organisation. PROBLEM: This study was performed to evaluate the occurrence as well as the level of the interference of sperm-associated antibodies on fertilization process. METHOD: Motile sperm suspensions from 28 infertile patients with high degree of autoimmunization against the sperm head were tested with the zona pellucida (ZP) binding test and with the sperm penetration assay (SPA) enhanced with TEST-yolk buffer. Both tests were also performed using donor sperm exposed and non-exposed to the patients' circulating sperm antibodies. Infertile men may suffer from sexual dysfunction (SD) when undergoing an assisted reproductive technology programme. Abstract Despite huge progress in hormonal therapy and improved in vitro fertilization methods, the success rates in infertility treatment are still limited. A recently discovered mechanism revealed the interplay between the plasma protein fetuin‐B and the cortical granule‐based proteinase ovastacin to be a novel key mechanism in the regulation of fertilization. Upon sperm–egg fusion, cleavage of a distinct zona pellucida component by ovastacin destroys the sperm receptor, enhances zona robustness, and eventually provides a definitive block against polyspermy. Fertility-sparing approach in women affected by stage i and low-grade endometrial carcinoma: An updated overview

Endometrial cancer (EC) is a deleterious condition which strongly affects a woman’s quality of life. Although aggressive interventions should be considered to treat high-grade EC, a conservative approach should be taken into consideration for women wishing to conceive. In this scenario, we present an overview about the EC fertility-sparing approach state of art. The effects of HPV infection on semen: first results from a new approach.

Study question: The effect of HPV infection on semen characteristics was investigated using a new method that allow to evaluate virus localization in the different semen components. Summary answer: Our data indicate a correlation between HPV infection of exfoliated epithelial cells (from spermatic ducts and accessory glands) and reduction of sperm cell motility.
