The Power of Word-Frequency Based Alignment-Free Functions: a Comprehensive Large-Scale Experimental Analysis

2021

Abstract Motivation Alignment-free (AF) distance/similarity functions are a key tool for sequence analysis. Experimental studies on real datasets abound and, to some extent, there are also studies regarding their control of false positive rate (Type I error). However, assessment of their power, i.e. their ability to identify true similarity, has been limited to some members of the D2 family. The corresponding experimental studies have concentrated on short sequences, a scenario no longer adequate for current applications, where sequence lengths may vary considerably. Such a State of the Art is methodologically problematic, since information regarding a key feature such as power is either mi…

Discriminative pattern discovery for the characterization of different network populations

2023

Abstract Motivation An interesting problem is to study how gene co-expression varies in two different populations, associated with healthy and unhealthy individuals, respectively. To this aim, two important aspects should be taken into account: (i) in some cases, pairs/groups of genes show collaborative attitudes, emerging in the study of disorders and diseases; (ii) information coming from each single individual may be crucial to capture specific details, at the basis of complex cellular mechanisms; therefore, it is important avoiding to miss potentially powerful information, associated with the single samples. Results Here, a novel approach is proposed, such that two different input popul…

Registration and fusion of segmented left atrium CT images with CARTO electrical maps for the ablative treatment of atrial fibrillation

2005

This study aims to extract the interior surface of the left atrium (LA) and pulmonary veins (PVs) from threedimensional tomographic data and to integrate it with LA CARTO electrical maps. The separation of LA and PVs from other overlapping structures of the heart was performed processing 3D CT data by marker-controlled watershed segmentation and surface extraction. CARTO maps were then registered on the L A internal surface by a stochastic optimization algorithm based on simulated annealing. The residual registration error resulted inferior to 3 mm. The integration between electrophysiological and high resolved anatomic information of LA results feasible and may constitute a significant sup…

String Attractors and Infinite Words

2022

The notion of string attractor has been introduced by Kempa and Prezza (STOC 2018) in the context of Data Compression and it represents a set of positions of a finite word in which all of its factors can be “attracted”. The smallest size γ∗ of a string attractor for a finite word is a lower bound for several repetitiveness measures associated with the most common compression schemes, including BWT-based and LZ-based compressors. The combinatorial properties of the measure γ∗ have been studied in [Mantaci et al., TCS 2021]. Very recently, a complexity measure, called string attractor profile function, has been introduced for infinite words, by evaluating γ∗ on each prefix. Such a measure has…

An analysis of ego network communities and temporal a affinity for online social networks

2017

The wide diffusion of Online Social Networks (OSNs) presents several advantages, like the definition of simple tools for information sharing and spreading. However, OSNs present also some drawbacks, one of the most important one is the problem of privacy disclosures. Distributed Online Social Networks (DOSNs), which decentralize the control of the social network, have been recently proposed to overcome these issues. The decentralization of the control has issued several challenges, one of the main ones is guaranteeing data availability without relying on a central server. To define users’ data allocation strategies, the knowledge of the structure of the ego network and of the user’ temporal…

An Analysis of the Internal Organization of Facebook Groups

2019

With the rapid development and growth of online social networks (OSNs), researchers have been pushed forward to improve the knowledge of these complex networks by analyzing several aspects, such as the types of social media, the structural properties of the network, or the interaction patterns among users. In particular, a relevant effort has been devoted to the study and identification of cohesive groups of users in OSNs (also referred as communities) because they are the basic building block of each OSN. While several research works on groups in OSNs have mainly focused on identifying the types of groups and the contents created by their members, the analysis of internal organizations of …

Reliability of Short-Term Heart Rate Variability Indexes Assessed through Photoplethysmography

2018

The gold standard method to monitor heart rate variability (HRV) comprises measuring the time series of interbeat interval durations from electrocardiographic (ECG) recordings. However, due to the widespread use, simplicity and usability of photoplethysmographic (PPG) techniques, monitoring pulse rate variability (PRV) from pulse wave recordings has become a viable alternative to standard HRV analysis. The present study investigates the accuracy of PRV, measured as a surrogate of HRV, for the quantification of descriptive indexes computed in the time domain (mean, variance), frequency domain (low-to-high frequency power ratio LF/HF, HF band central frequency) and information domain (entropy…

Cardiovascular and respiratory variability during orthostatic and mental stress: A comparison of entropy estimators

2017

The aim of this study is to characterize cardiovascular and respiratory signals during orthostatic and mental stress as reflected in indices of entropy and complexity, providing a comparison between the performance of different estimators. To this end, the heart rate variability, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and respiration time series were extracted from the recordings of 61 healthy volunteers undergoing a protocol consisting of supine rest, head-up tilt test and mental arithmetic task. The analysis was performed in the information domain using measures of entropy and conditional entropy, estimated through model-based (linear) and model-free (binning, nearest neighbor)…

Disentangling cardiovascular control mechanisms during head-down tilt via joint transfer entropy and self-entropy decompositions

2015

A full decomposition of the predictive entropy (PE) of the spontaneous variations of the heart period (HP) given systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and respiration (R) is proposed. The PE of HP is decomposed into the joint transfer entropy (JTE) from SAP and R to HP and self-entropy (SE) of HP. The SE is the sum of three terms quantifying the synergistic/redundant contributions of HP and SAP, when taken individually and jointly, to SE and one term conditioned on HP and SAP denoted as the conditional SE (CSE) of HP given SAP and R. The JTE from SAP and R to HP is the sum of two terms attributable to SAP or R plus an extra term describing the redundant/synergistic contribution to the JTE. All q…
