A Windowing strategy for Distributed Data Mining optimized through GPUs

2017

Abstract This paper introduces an optimized Windowing based strategy for inducing decision trees in Distributed Data Mining scenarios. Windowing consists in selecting a sample of the available training examples (the window) to induce a decision tree with an usual algorithm, e.g., J48; finding instances not covered by this tree (counter examples) in the remaining training examples, adding them to the window to induce a new tree; and repeating until a termination criterion is met. In this way, the number of training examples required to induce the tree is reduced considerably, while maintaining the expected accuracy levels; which is paid in terms of time performance. Our proposed enhancements…

A new autonomous data transmission reduction method for wireless sensors networks

2018

International audience; The inherent limitation in energy resources and computational power for sensor nodes in a Wireless Sensor Network, poses the challenge of extending the lifetime of these networks. Since radio communication is the dominant energy consuming activity, most presented approaches focused on reducing the number of data transmitted to the central workstation. This can be achieved by deploying both on the workstation and the sensor node a synchronized prediction model capable of forecasting future values. Thus, enabling the sensor node to transmit only the values that surpasses a predefined error threshold. This mechanism offers a decrease in the cost of transmission energy f…

Collaborative Activities and Methods

2016

Having described the context for collaborative activities (in Chap. 1), and reviewed the basic aspects of computer supported decision-making activities (in Chap. 2), we will present in this section several specific methods used in collaborative decision making. The methods and techniques presented in the chapter are independent of the information technologies upon they are instantiated.

Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) Representation in Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML)

2017

International audience; This paper describes Gaussian process regression (GPR) models presented in predictive model markup language (PMML). PMML is an extensible-markup-language (XML) -based standard language used to represent data-mining and predictive analytic models, as well as pre- and post-processed data. The previous PMML version, PMML 4.2, did not provide capabilities for representing probabilistic (stochastic) machine-learning algorithms that are widely used for constructing predictive models taking the associated uncertainties into consideration. The newly released PMML version 4.3, which includes the GPR model, provides new features: confidence bounds and distribution for the pred…

Concept Drift Detection Using Online Histogram-Based Bayesian Classifiers

2016

In this paper, we present a novel algorithm that performs online histogram-based classification, i.e., specifically designed for the case when the data is dynamic and its distribution is non-stationary. Our method, called the Online Histogram-based Naïve Bayes Classifier (OHNBC) involves a statistical classifier based on the well-established Bayesian theory, but which makes some assumptions with respect to the independence of the attributes. Moreover, this classifier generates a prediction model using uni-dimensional histograms, whose segments or buckets are fixed in terms of their cardinalities but dynamic in terms of their widths. Additionally, our algorithm invokes the principles of info…

A GIS-MCDM-based road network planning for tourism development and management in Arasbaran forest, Iran.

2019

It is very important for managers to plan a road network that meets all the requirements for tourism development and management. The aim of this study was to evaluate and modify an existing road network for tourism purposes in the Arasbaran protected area. First, the map layers of effective criteria were prepared in GIS and were standardized by a fuzzy logic approach and finally combined considering their relative importance weights obtained through pair-wise comparison technique. A suitability map was then acquired. After that, 14 different scenarios of road network were designed to access the recreational area using PEGGER extension in ArcView. Then, they were evaluated in terms of techni…

Current anthropogenic pressures on agro-ecological protected coastal wetlands

2015

Coastal wetlands are areas that suffer from great pressure. Much of it is due to the rapid development of the surrounding artificial landscapes, where socio-economic factors lead to alterations in the nearby environment, affecting the quality of natural and agricultural systems. This work analyses interconnections among landscapes under the hypothesis that urban-artificial impacts could be detected on soils and waters of an agro-ecological protected area, L'Albufera de Valencia Natural Park, located in the vicinity of the City of Valencia, Spain. The methodological framework developed addresses two types of anthropogenic pressure: (1) direct, due to artificialisation of soil covers that cau…

Constraint Management in Engineering of Complex Information Systems

2009

We propose to build an engineering environment for information systems by using metamodels, OCL and symbolic model checkers to manage  constraints. Our proposal is based on a definition of constraints as 3D spaces with  dimensions corresponding to UML diagrams, constructs, and abstraction levels. We show how such environments can help with engineering quality complex systems by allowing to lift up a part of constraint verifications.

Perceived-Value-driven Optimization of Energy Consumption in Smart Homes

2020

Residential energy consumption has been rising rapidly during the last few decades. Several research efforts have been made to reduce residential energy consumption, including demand response and smart residential environments. However, recent research has shown that these approaches may actually cause an increase in the overall consumption, due to the complex psychological processes that occur when human users interact with these energy management systems. In this article, using an interdisciplinary approach, we introduce a perceived-value driven framework for energy management in smart residential environments that considers how users perceive values of different appliances and how the us…

Conceptualising Design of Learning Management Systems to Address Institutional Realities

2018

There is growing interest in the use of E-Learning in higher educational institutions. However, studies have shown mismatches between Learning Management System (LMS) design and the general institutional context in developing countries. In this paper, we assess the design and implementation requirements for Makerere University LMS against the overall institution context. This research follows a qualitative method (interviews) and uses case study. We employ the design reality gap model to investigate the design requirements of the LMS against current institutional realities. A design reality gap of 46 was obtained implying ad-hoc measures need to be put in place otherwise the failure/stagnat…
