Originally from tropical Asia, the Red Palm Weevil (RPW Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) is the most dangerous and deadly pest of many palm trees, and there have been reports of its recent detection in France, Greece and Italy. At present, emphasis is on the development of integrated pest management based on biological control rather than on chemical insecticides, however the success of both systems is often insufficient. Transcriptional and translational study of the Drosophila subobscura hsp83 gene in normal and heat-shock conditions

In this paper we report a transcriptional and translational study of the hsp83 gene of Drosophila subobscura. This gene is located at the 18C region of the J chromosome. A monoclonal antibody raised against hsp83 was used for the immunological detection of this protein by Western blotting throughout the development of D. subobscura in control and heat-shock conditions. Our results indicate that puff 18C is not only heat-shock inducible but is also expressed during normal development and its level of expression increases at the end of the prepupa period. The heat shock response of Chironomus polytene chromosomes was reexamined. The in vivo effects of heat shock on chromosomal [3H]uridine labeling, RNA polymerase II distribution and ribonucleoprotein (RNP) formation were investigated. One primary result is a clarification of the number and location of chromosomal sites strongly induced by treatment at 37 degrees C for 60 min. In total, seven major heat shock loci were identified by transcription autoradiography in Chironomus tentans: I-20A, II-16B, II-10C, II-4B, II-1C, III-12B, and IV-5C. The Romanian fauna comprises two species of Aquarius Schellenberg, 1800, eight species of Gerris Fabricius, 1794 and one species of Limnoporus Stål, 1868, and we hereby update the distribution and provide insights on the phenology and ecology of all eleven species in this country. We furthermore update the distribution of the two closely related species Gerris gibbifer Schummel, 1832 and G. maculatus Tamanini, 1946 in southeastern Europe. Neonicotinoids from coated seeds toxic for honeydew-feeding biological control agents

Seed coating (‘seed treatment’) is the leading delivery method of neonicotinoid insecticides in major crops such as soybean, wheat, cotton and maize. However, this prophylactic use of neonicotinoids is widely discussed from the standpoint of environmental costs. Growing soybean plants from neonicotinoid-coated seeds in field, we demonstrate that soybean aphids (Aphis glycines) survived the treatment, and excreted honeydew containing neonicotinoids. Biochemical analyses demonstrated that honeydew excreted by the soybean aphid contained substantial concentrations of neonicotinoids even one month after sowing of the crop. The Vip3Aa protein is an insecticidal protein secreted by Bacillus thuringiensis during the vegetative stage of growth. The activity of this protein has been tested after different steps/protocols of purification using Spodoptera frugiperda as a control insect. The results showed that the Vip3Aa protoxin was stable and retained full toxicity after being subjected to common biochemical steps used in protein purification. Bioassays with the protoxin in S. frugiperda and S. exigua showed pronounced differences in LC(50) values when mortality was measured at 7 vs. 10d. Abstract Vip3 proteins have been described to be secreted by Bacillus thuringiensis during the vegetative growth phase and to display a broad insecticidal spectrum against lepidopteran larvae. Vip3Aa protoxin has been reported to be significantly more toxic to Spodoptera frugiperda than to Spodoptera exigua and differences in the midgut processing have been proposed to be responsible.
