An Introduction to Ontology Based Structured Knowledge Base System: Knowledge Acquisition Module
2013
The following text presents the method of supplementing and verifying information stored in a framework system of the semantic knowledge base. The indicated method refers to the knowledge of ontological character, in other words to information about definitions of concepts and relationships among them. The aim of the method is the constant supplementing and verifying of the knowledge, and making more precise and detailed information about existing connections between concepts. The key aspect of the method is questions generating strictly dependent on the preconceived structure of stored knowledge.
Vertical Integration due to Software Systems' Modularity
2009
In their product portfolio, OSS/BSS software vendors make products pre-integrated with each other as well as with other related OSS/BSS products. Prior to the full-scale development and integration, it is vital for these vendors to assess which products are reasonable to integrate. Such integration of software may be aimed at achieving different goals, such as: Reducing software integration efforts. Software vendors aim at maximizing their profits, whereas their customers (i.e., CSPs) aim at minimizing their costs by avoiding the integration job. As a result, to approach a win–win scenario, vendors provide already integrated products or subsystems (pre-integrated modules). Sharing similar k…
<title>Distance functions in dynamic integration of data mining techniques</title>
2000
One of the most important directions in the improvement of data mining and knowledge discovery is the integration of multiple data mining techniques. An integration method needs to be able either to evaluate and select the most appropriate data mining technique or to combine two or more techniques efficiently. A recent integration method for the dynamic integration of multiple data mining techniques is based on the assumption that each of the data mining techniques is the best one inside a certain subarea of the whole domain area. This method uses an instance-based learning approach to collect information about the competence areas of the mining techniques and applies a distance function to…
Reconsidering learning by exporting
2012
Self-selection and learning by exporting are the main explanations for the higher productivity of exporting firms. But, whereas evidence on self-selection is largely undisputed, results on learning by exporting are mixed and far from conclusive. However, recent research by De Loecker (J Int Econ 73(1):69–98, 2007) has shown that the conclusions from previous learning by exporting studies may have been driven by strong assumptions about the evolution of productivity and the role of export status. Relaxing these assumptions turns out to be critical to find evidence of learning by exporting in a representative sample of Spanish manufacturing firms. Our results indicate that the yearly average …
EMU and the Euro-Mediterranean Dialogue: Trade Interdependence between Mediterranean and Euro-area Countries
2009
Economic interdependence and trade encourage international dialogue and represent a base for reducing international conflicts. Hence, international co-operation for the reduction of barriers to trade and capital flows can be important not only in inducing economic progress, but also in promoting peace (Polachek and Siegle 2006). In this respect, the introduction of the euro represents an epochal event for both the participants in the single European currency and for their external partners, and in particular those in neighbouring regions. However, whilst a large body of literature has focused on analysing the first, in particular, with respect to the impact of the euro on intra-regional tra…
Measuring the market power in the ceramic tile industry: An international comparison
2004
This paper measures the degree of competition faced by Spanish and Italian exporters of ceramic tiles in several European Union member states. The results indicate that Spanish producers have a substantial market power while Italian exporters face a high degree of competition. This finding is consistent with the significant gain (loss) in the world production and export shares that Spanish (Italian) producers experienced during the 1990s. The results are also consistent with accounting data. Furthermore, comparisons in the extent of market power across source countries and European destination markets reveal that most variation in the data is related to the source country. JEL no. F12, F14,…
Before and after: employees' views on corporate social responsibility: energy‐sector stakeholders in Nordic post‐merger integration
2009
PurposeThe aim of this paper is to describe and qualitatively explain certain observations concerning corporate social responsibility from the personnel standpoint with special reference to various stakeholders.Design/methodology/approachThe observations were made in connection with earlier studies on organizational change. The paper draws on stakeholder thinking and offers a view regarding the way employees perceive business issues concerning CSR in relation to corporate stakeholder groups. Should a business give priority to the interests of its owners or take all stakeholder groups equally into account? How do employees see their own relations with other stakeholder groups, and do their v…
RDF-Based Web Information Integration System: A Travel System Use Case
2018
Enterprises are continually faced with the challenge of integrating heterogeneous systems with incompatible interfaces, data structures (Source structured relational databases, semi-structured sources, XML, or unstructured documents: texts), access mode and technologies. When companies adopt SOA (Service Oriented Architecture), that provides an alternative to traditional design of applications by allowing a designer to assemble and compose existing services that implement the functions of a given application domain, they realize that there is a significant risk that Web services only do not solve the problem of compatibility in the data. Our paper gives a solution to these issues by setting…
Competitiveness Gap of the European Union Member Countries in the Context of Europe 2020 Strategy
2015
Abstract This paper is addressing issues of the competitiveness gap of the European Union member countries in the context of Europe 2020 strategy's smart growth. Authors are examining current competitiveness situation when economic performance of some countries are significantly better than others and how does it fit in the competitiveness framework set by Europe 2020 strategy. To have a closer look at the smart growth of European Union member countries authors examine R&D expenditures and their impact on patents and high-technology share in exports as one of the indicators of the competitiveness.
