Children with Dyslexia Have Altered Cross-Modal Processing Linked to Binocular Fusion. A Pilot Study

2020
Introduction The cause of dyslexia, a reading disability characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities, is unknown. A considerable body of evidence shows that dyslexics have phonological disorders. Other studies support a theory of altered cross-modal processing with the existence of a pan-sensory temporal processing deficit associated with dyslexia. Learning to read ultimately relies on the formation of automatic multisensory representations of sounds and their written representation while eyes fix a word or move along a text. We therefore studied the effect of brief sounds on vision with a modification of binocular f…
The Rolf Method of Structural Integration and Pelvic Floor Muscle Facilitation: Preliminary Results of a Randomized, Interventional Study
2020
The management of pelvic floor dysfunctions might need to be based on a comprehensive neuro-musculoskeletal therapy such as The Rolf Method of Structural Integration (SI). The aim of the study was to evaluate the pelvic floor muscle (PFM) after the tenth session of SI by using surface electromyography (sEMG). This was a randomized, interventional study. Thirty-three healthy women were randomly assigned to the experimental (SI) or control group. The outcome measures included PFM bioelectrical activity, assessed using sEMG and endovaginal probes. An intervention in the SI group included 60 min of SI once a week, and teaching on how to contract and relax PFMs
Mapping symbols to sounds: electrophysiological correlates of the impaired reading process in dyslexia
2012
Dyslexic and control first-grade school children were compared in a Symbol-to-Sound matching test based on a non-linguistic audiovisual training which is known to have a remediating effect on dyslexia. Visual symbol patterns had to be matched with predicted sound patterns. Sounds incongruent with the corresponding visual symbol (thus not matching the prediction) elicited the N2b and P3a event-related potential (ERP) components relative to congruent sounds in control children. Their ERPs resembled the ERP effects previously reported for healthy adults with this paradigm. In dyslexic children, N2b onset latency was delayed and its amplitude significantly reduced over left hemisphere whereas P…
Weighted Integration of Duration Information Across Visual and Auditory Modality Is Influenced by Modality-Specific Attention.
2021
We constantly integrate multiple types of information from different sensory modalities. Generally, such integration is influenced by the modality that we attend to. However, for duration perception, it has been shown that when duration information from visual and auditory modalities is integrated, the perceived duration of the visual stimulus leaned toward the duration of the auditory stimulus, irrespective of which modality was attended. In these studies, auditory dominance was assessed using visual and auditory stimuli with different durations whose timing of onset and offset would affect perception. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effect of attention on duration integr…
Mediji na manjinskim jezicima i novinari u kontekstu društvene integracije u Estoniji
2015
The article focuses on the role of Russian-speaking journalists and the potential of Russianlanguage media in advancing societal integration in Estonia. As a consequence of socialist colonization during the Soviet regime a quarter of Estonian population today is Russian-speaking. The two main language communities have different informational spaces separated by a language barrier. Integration can only be successful if there is unhampered communication between minority and majority groups, and equal opportunities for individuals and groups to participate in the public sphere. First, we discuss the concept of minority language media and the position of Russian-language media in the context of…
Unaccompanied Migrant Children in Sicily. From the Arrival to a Social Inclusion Project
2018
Knowledge about the language of the country of arrival or living, is the basic for the access to citizenship rights and social rights. Knowledge of language becomes an instrument with which to decipher the surrounding reality, translating the grammar from the field to democracy. Equality also passes through the possession of the word.Starting from the hypothesis that exists a strong link between Italian language speaking, listening, comprehension capacities and in general multilingual skills and the social inclusion of young migrants, the research aims to explore two dimensions of the Life Project of Uams. The research analyses the attendance in CPIAS (Italian language teaching and learning…
Integrative Strategies in Mixed Methods Research
2020
Despite the critical role of integration as a methodological concept in mixed methods studies, researchers lack a theory for integrating. In this article, we introduce the concept of integrative strategy by analyzing three mixed methods rehabilitation-related studies. These studies represented an analytical strategy based on a multiperspective stakeholder approach, a theory-bound analytical strategy, and a theory-oriented synthesizing strategy. We define integrative strategy as a process in which the system of relations within the study is explicated and justified in accordance with the research purpose and phenomenon. This article contributes to mixed methods research by providing a novel…
Focus ethnography on 'preparation for basic education' in Finland
2016
The research analyses a unique approach of everyday life experiences of newcomers in relation to their initial education towards mainstream schooling. The aim of the research was to find out how pupils’ gets motivated towards Finnish language learning skills and how social life integration impact on pupils’ initial education as they navigate their pathways in their new environment. The research focused on observation, artistic, pencil and paper diary, and interaction method of approach in triangulating those everyday life experiences into perspective. An audio-recorder, vignettes, and packet-notes were used for the data gathering processes. The analyses of the research were based on grounde…
Internet two sided market regulation: A zero-ratong analysis from a theoretical and experimental approach
2022
Third Sector Hybridization and Migrant Integration : Cases of Two Migrant Youth Organizations in Finland
2018
In Europe, with its larger numbers of recent newcomer migrants, there lingers the important question of how to facilitate migrant integration into society. This article focuses particularly on migrant organizations and their role in integration processes in the cultural context of Finland, where there is a tradition of civil society corporatism, but where the role of the third sector has traditionally also been strong. In addition, the third sector in Finland has in recent years been experiencing changes, as demands of service provision increase, and at the same time individual participation in formal associations is decreasing. Keeping these tendencies in mind, in this article we study two…
