AI Ethics - Critical Reflections on Embedding Ethical Frameworks in AI Technology
2021
Embedding ethical frameworks in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has been a popular topic for academic research for the past decade [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. The approaches of the studies differ in how AI technology, ethics, role of technical artefacts and socio-technical aspects of AI are perceived. In addition, most studies define insufficiently what the connection between the process of embedding ethical frameworks to AI technology and the larger framework of AI ethics is. These deficiencies have caused that the concept of AI ethics and the construct of embedding ethical parameters into AI are used in an ambiguous, rather than in a complementary manner. One reason for the ambiguity…
Evaluating End-user Support : Validating the Use of Multiple Media in a CSCW Application
2006
Human-centred views on information systems are gaining more and more attention in IS community. The need to evaluate information systems from such a perspective is thus evident. In this paper, we exploit our earlier developed theoretical framework for evaluating end-user support in information systems, and demonstrate its usage in validating the use of multiple communication and collaboration media in a CSCW application. The evaluation is performed in terms of user perception in ISD process, users’ role in organizational information processing, and users’ behavioural nuances. Our study shows that a context specific theoretical framework is useful in validating the empirical results of syste…
Kilencévesek a lakatlan szigeten : az érvelés szituációs beágyazottságának jelei. Esettanulmány
2015
This case study is a qualitative analysis of a video-recorded reasoning situation in which a pair of nine year old children argues for tools that should be taken to a deserted island. The students’ answers to a sociometric questionnaire are taken into account to establish background data on the children’s social positions in their clas and into their relationship. This information was used to interpret the multimodal data. A creative problemsolving task was the context of the reasoning situation, where the children were asked to choose 7 objects from 17 to be taken to a deserted island. Although there are many studies on children’s reasoning, it’s bodily and socially distributed nature has …
All in the same boat : a comparison of intercultural interaction between home students and international students in two universities
2012
Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää kansainvälisten opiskelijoiden kokemuksia kansainvälisestä kanssakäymisestä paikallisten opiskelijoiden kanssa. Tutkielman on aikomus tarkastella, onko eri kulttuureissa opiskelevilla kansainvälisillä opiskelijoilla samankaltaisia kokemuksia ja näkemyksiä paikallisista opiskelijoista. Aiemmissa tutkimuksissa on käynyt ilmi, että vaikka kansainvälisten opiskelijoiden kokemukset vaihtokaudesta tai tutkinnon suorittamisesta ulkomailla ovat olleet pääasiassa positiivisia, varsinkin kanssakäymisessä paikallisten opiskelijoiden kanssa on edelleen parantamisen varaa, sillä kansainväliset opiskelijat kokevat paikalliset opiskelijat vaikeasti lähestyttäviksi ja …
Synthesis and Solid-State X-ray Structure of the Mononuclear Palladium(II) Complex Based on 1,2,3-Triazole Ligand
2022
Herein, we described the synthesis and X-ray crystal structure of the new [Pd(3)2Cl2] complex with 1,2,3-triazole-based ligand (3). In the unit cell, there are two [Pd(3)2Cl2] molecules, and the asymmetric unit comprised half of this formula due to the presence of an inversion symmetry element at the Pd(II) center. The monoclinic unit cell volume is 1327.85(6) Å3, with crystal parameters of a = 10.7712(2) Å, b = 6.8500(2) Å, and c = 18.2136(6) Å, while β = 98.851(2)°. The structure comprised two trans triazole ligand units coordinated to the Pd(II) ion via one of the N-atoms of the triazole moiety. In addition, the Pd(II) is further coordinated with two tran…
Attending to and fostering argumentation in whole class discussion
2018
Prior studies highlighted the importance of whole class discussion after student activities and have focused, for example, on teacher moves in supporting discussion. We characterize two processes in teacher-students interaction in argumentation discussions: attending to and fostering. These processes describe how student argumentation feeds teacher talk that in turn feeds student argumentation. We analysed video recordings of one whole class 7th grade lesson when students made geometric constructions and engaged in argumentation discussion. We elaborated on four themes in how the teacher talk attended to and fostered student argumentation. We argue that the concepts of attending to and fost…
Cognition in Interaction : Challenges in Assessing Persons with Sensory and Multiple disabilities
2021
This article reports a qualitative study of cognitive assessments of three teenagers with sensory and multiple disabilities, including moderate to profound developmental disability. The aim was to evaluate the possibilities for adapting standardized tests and the implementation of interactional partnership in assessment. Cognitive assessments were made with an individually-adapted psychological assessment tool, the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development. The assessment situations were video-recorded and analyzed based on sociocultural theories of early interaction, dynamic assessment, and the bodily-tactile modality of cognition. The results showed that the requirements for assessm…
Symbolic Interactions : Towards a Cognitive Scientific Theory of Meaning in Human Technology Interaction
2015
Information technology has perpetuated the role of symbolism in everyday life practice, through its reliance on sign systems for its creation and operation. Increasingly attention has been placed on applying semiotic techniques to analyze user interface design and usability. Surprisingly, although the move towards symbolic interaction has been one of the most striking components of the digital shift, it has proven difficult to build bridges between semiotics and HTI-design thinking. In this article we argue that the problems in linking semiotic analysis of human technology interaction with modern HTI-design paradigms such as usability or user experience arise from a theoretical gap between …
Appraisal and Mental Contents in Human-Technology Interaction
2015
User experience has become a key concept in investigating human-technology interaction. Therefore it has become essential to consider how user experience can be explicated using psychological concepts. Emotion has been widely considered to be an important dimension of user experience, and one obvious link between modern psychology and the analysis of user experience assumes the analysis of emotion in interaction processes. In this paper, the focus is on the relationship between action types and elicited emotional patterns. In three experiments including N = 40 participants each, it is demonstrated that the types of emotions experienced when people evaluate and use technical artefacts differ…
