FAME: Software for analysing rock microstructures

Determination of rock microstructures leads to a better understanding of the formation and deformation of polycrystalline solids. Here, we present FAME (Fabric Analyser based Microstructure Evaluation), an easy-to-use MATLAB®-based software for processing datasets recorded by an automated fabric analyser microscope. FAME is provided as a MATLAB®-independent Windows® executable with an intuitive graphical user interface. Raw data from the fabric analyser microscope can be automatically loaded, filtered and cropped before analysis. Abstract Aquatic eutrophication is becoming a serious environmental problem throughout the world. The utility of bivalves as bio-filters to improve water quality and reduce algal blooms has been widely acknowledged, but the potential usefulness of bivalve shells as retrospective monitors of eutrophication-induced environmental change has received little attention. Noble gas magmatic signature of the Andean Northern Volcanic Zone from fluid inclusions in minerals

Trace volatile elements like He are key for understanding the mantle source signature of magmas and to better constrain the relative roles of subduction and crustal processes to the variability of along-arc chemical and isotopic signatures of magmatic fluids. Here we report on noble gas abundances and isotopic data of Fluid Inclusions (FIs) in eruptive products and/or fumarolic gases from the Colombia-Ecuador segment of Andean Northern Volcanic Zone (NVZ). Pre- and syn-eruptive geochemistry of volcanic gases from Soufriere Hills of Montserrat, West Indies

International audience; Soufriere Hills fumaroles contained magmaderived volatiles before and during the eruption initiated in 1995 but also preserved a typical and quite steady hydrothermal coinposition. Chemical changes due to increased boiling and a greater input of oxidizing magmatic gas occurred only at Galway's Soufriere, the most active fumarolic field. Trace elements in the thermal groundwaters of Vulcano Island (Sicily)

The chemical concentrations of many trace elements that have never before been examined in Vulcano Island groundwaters are reported. Chemical data indicate that rock composition is not the only factor determining the metal content in the aqueous system. The observed concentrations depend mainly on: (1) the chemical composition of the host rocks; (2) the chemical–physical conditions of the weathering solution (temperature, acidity, redox conditions); (3) input of magmatic gases; (4) adsorption of metal ions on oxide particles, formation of soluble complexes and/or precipitation of solid phases. Abstract The island of Pantelleria (Sicily Strait), the type locality for pantellerite, has been the locus of major caldera-forming eruptions that culminated, ca. 50 ka ago, in the formation of the Cinque Denti caldera produced by the Green Tuff eruption.
