Racemic and Optically Pure Heptahelicene-2-carboxylic Acid: Its Synthesis and Self-Assembly into Nanowire-Like Aggregates

2010

Heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid was effectively synthesised from suitably functionalised naphthalene building blocks. Methoxy-substituted 1,1'-ethyne-1,2-diylbis(2-but-3-yn-1-ylnaphthalene) was cyclised in the presence of CpCo(CO)(2)/PPh(3) to 2-methoxy-7,8,11,12-tetrahydroheptahelicene, which was converted into heptahelicen-2-yl trifluoromethanesulfonate. This reactive intermediate underwent Pd(OAc)(2)/dppp-catalysed methoxycarbonylation reaction to provide, after hydrolysis, heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid. The racemate was resolved into enantiomers by semipreparative HPLC on a chiral column. The helicity of (+)-(P)-heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid was assigned by correlating its CD spectr…

Metallocene sulfide chemistry of niobium and tantalum: new insights into the formation of niobium-polysulfido complexes and synthesis, structure, and…

1992

The previously described reaction of Cp'2NbH3 (Cp' = t-BuC5H4) with S8 was investigated with regard to the kinetic stabilization of as yet elusive intermediates during the formation of the polysulfide complex Cp'4Nb2S9 (1). Therefore, the permethylated complex Cp*2NbS3H (2; Cp* = C5Me5) and the Ta complex Cp'2TaS2H (3) were synthesized in a related reaction and structurally investigated. Despite the problematic localization of the hydride atom during X-ray crystallographic studies, the molecules can be described in a proper manner: Characteristic of 2 and 3 are M(eta(2)-S2) cores to which either an SH (2) or a H (3) ligand is attached. Complex 3 is the first known tantalocene sulfide. It re…

Mechanism of the Oxidation of Sulfides by Dioxiranes. 1. Intermediacy of a 10-S-4 Hypervalent Sulfur Adduct

2002

Earlier studies established that dimethyldioxirane (1a) reacts with sulfides 2 in two consecutive concerted electrophilic oxygen-transfer steps to give first sulfoxides 3 and then sulfones 4. The same sequential electrophilic oxidation model was assumed for the reaction of sulfides 2 with the strongly electrophilic methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane (1b). In this paper we report on a systematic and general study on the mechanism of the reaction of simple sulfides 2 with DMDO (1a) and TFDO (1b) which provides clear evidence for the involvement of hypervalent sulfur species in the oxidation process. In the oxidation of sulfides 2a-c, diphenyl sulfide (2d), para-substituted aryl methyl sulfides …

Cyclic Sulfonimidates by Dynamic Diastereomer-Differentiating Cyclisation: Large-Scale Synthesis and Mechanistic Studies

2001

A dynamic diastereomer differentiating cyclisation is the key step in a new large-scale synthesis of both enantiomers of the cyclic sulfonimidates 1 (Aldrich no. 54099-4) and ent-1 (Aldrich no. 54412-4). These are valuable starting materials in the asymmetric synthesis of chiral oxa- and azaheterocyclic compounds. NMR spectroscopic studies on the reacting system reveal N-chloro sulfinamides to be reactive intermediates in the oxidative chlorination of sulfinamides with tert-butyl hypochlorite and allow for the inspection of the configurational behaviour of the involved sulfonimidoyl chlorides and sulfonimidoyl bromides.

Photodissociation of Formyl Fluoride in Rare Gas Matrixes

2006

Photodissociation of formyl fluoride (HCOF) is studied in Ar, Kr, and Xe matrixes at 248 and 193 nm excitation by following spectral changes in the infrared absorption spectra. In all matrixes, the main photodissociation products are CO/HF species, including CO-HF and OC-HF complexes and thermally unstable CO/HF species (a distorted CO/HF complex or a reaction intermediate), which indicate negligible cage exit of atoms produced via the C-F and C-H bond cleavage channels. However, the observation of traces of H, F, CO, CO(2), F(2)CO, FCO, and HRg(2)(+) (Rg = Kr or Xe) in Kr and Xe matrixes would imply some importance of other reaction channels too. The analysis of the decay curves of the pre…

ChemInform Abstract: The Chemistry of Unsaturated Nitrogen-Heterocyclic Compounds Containing Carbonyl Groups

2010

Publisher Summary Most hydroxy-substituted azaheteroaromatic compounds exist predominately in the NH/carbonyl tautomeric form, and these compounds have been widely discussed. This chapter provides an overview of azaheteroaromatic compounds and I-azetin-4-ones—these are those azaheterocycles that contain in the ring at least one carbonyl group and one or two nitrogen atoms in the form of C=N or N=N bonds. Many of these compounds are unstable but their importance as reactive intermediates is established, and many of them could be used as synthons in the preparation of pharmacologically active compounds. The chapter describes the free existence of I-azetin-4-one and the nucleophilic substituti…

Density Functional Theory Study of the Cycloaddition Reaction of Furan Derivatives with Masked o-Benzoquinones. Does the Furan Act as a Dienophile in…

2002

The molecular mechanism for the cycloaddition reaction between 2-methylfuran and a masked o-benzoquinone has been characterized using quantum mechanical calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G theory level. An analysis of the results on the reaction pathway shows that the reaction takes place along a polar stepwise mechanism. The first and rate-determining step corresponds to the nucleophilic attack of the furan ring on the doubly conjugated position of the 2,4-dienone system present at the masked o-benzoquinone to give a zwitterionic intermediate. Closure of this intermediate affords the formally [2 + 4] cycloadduct. For the second step two reactive channels have been characterized corresponding t…

Ethical Versus Conventional Banking: A Case Study

2018

The 2008 financial crisis has changed the structure of banking, generating public distrust in the conventional financial system. An alternative has emerged as a result of this lack of confidence. This alternative is known as ethical banking. A growing number of investors, asset managers, and financial intermediaries have incorporated sustainability considerations into their business practices. This paper discusses the origins of ethical banking and describes its primary characteristics. The goal is to determine whether ethical banking can be as profitable as conventional banking despite only investing in projects based on social values. A comparative analysis is performed to identify differ…
