Characteristics of Workplace Learning Among Finnish Vocational Students
2009
In Finnish VET, students’ work experience is explicitly defined as workplace learning, instead of the practice of already learnt skills. Therefore, vocational students’ learning periods in the workplace are goal-oriented, guided and assessed. This paper examines the characteristics of students’ workplace learning and compares them with the characteristics of employees’ workplace learning. The data were collected with an Internet questionnaire from final-year vocational students (N = 3106). In total, 1603 students (52 %) answered the questionnaire. The data were analysed using quantitative methods. The results indicate that features typical of employees’ workplace learning can also be found …
Working on understanding during collaborative online reading
2012
This study examines how students in Finland (16-18 years of age) constructed meaning and knowledge in a collaborative online reading situation. Student pairs ( n = 19) were asked to write a joint essay on a controversial issue. First, the pairs discussed the topic freely to activate their prior knowledge. Next, they gathered source material on the Internet. Finally, they composed a joint essay. The data were collected using an interaction approach to verbal protocol data, along with video screen captures. In the analysis, three units were employed: episodes ( n = 562) for describing online reading practices; utterances ( n = 944) for identifying collaborative reading strategies; and collab…
The Mediational Role of Coping Strategies in the Relationship Between Self-Esteem and Risk of Internet Addiction
2017
The aim of the present study is to explore, through a mediation model, the relationship among self-esteem, coping strategies, and the risk of Internet addiction in a sample of 300 Italian university students. We submitted the data to a descriptive, mediational comparison between variables (t-test), and correlational statistical analyses. The results confirmed the effect of self-esteem on the risk of Internet addiction. However, we found that the introduction of coping strategies as a mediator gives rise to partial mediation. A low level of self-esteem is a predictor of avoidance-oriented coping that, in turn, affects the risk of Internet addiction.
Internet-Based Intervention for Secondary and Tertiary Prevention of Depressive Symptoms
2016
Depression is one of the most disabling psychological disorders worldwide. A very important challenge today consists on addressing the issue of depression from a preventive perspective. A growing body of research supports the efficacy of Internet-based treatments. We have developed an Internet-based program (Smiling is Fun) with the objective of helping people in prevention of depression and anxiety symptoms. It is based on classical cognitive behavioral techniques, such as behavioural activation, and also includes other positive psychological strategies to improve coping ability and positive mood. We applied this intervention program in people who had to cope at least with one stressor in …

«Lex Google»: Copyright Law and Internet Providers, Future Enemies or Allies?
2013
The German Federal Parliament is discussing the approval of the so-called “Lex Google” which will amend the German Copyright Act and provide for a number of improvements to the management of copyrighted content by Internet Service Providers. This paper focuses on the advantages and disadvantages linked to the diffusion of copyrighted content over the Internet and suggests that the Lex Google would benefit from taking better into account E-Commerce rules and ECJ case-law on Internet Service Providers.
Este es el fin de la escuela tal y como la conocemos. Unas reflexiones en tiempo de confinamiento.
2020
The crisis caused by COVID-19 has placed the school in an unprecedented scenario. From one day to the next, teaching –when this has been possible– has moved from being face-to-face to being virtual. It remains unknown what percentage of teachers and students may be teaching and learning telematically and to what strategies they are resorting. Under these circumstances, the differences among students in terms of economic and cultural capital are aggravated. If radical measures are not taken, it is likely that this period without face-to-face tea- ching may take its toll on an entire generation. Teachers, students and parents are now accessing educational content –of the kind provided by the …
Tailoring feedback in online assessment: Influence of learning styles on the feedback preferences and elaborated feedback effectiveness
2008
Design of feedback is a critical issue of online assessment development within Web-based Learning Systems (WBLSs). This paper examines the potential possibilities of tailoring the feedback that is presented to a student as a result of his/her preferences and responses to questions of an online test with respect to the individual learning styles (LS). The paper briefly reviews the main types of feedback that can be presented during online assessment and discusses the challenges in authoring and tailoring of feedback in WBLSs. We report the results of some recent experiments organized as online assessment of students through multiple-choice quizzes in which students were able to request diffe…

A framework for evaluating Internet-of-Things platforms: Application provider viewpoint
2014
Widespread adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) applications assumes a sustainable ecosystem of firms creating, distributing, and using these applications. Such an ecosystem often forms around a platform that implements commonly used functionality and offers it to the members of the ecosystem for creating applications and services. In IoT, such a platform may be materialized in a form of a cloud platform that supports the management of connected devices, and the development and use of the applications based on them. A number of cloud platforms targeting IoT applications are available in the market; to prosper, they need to assist the providers of the IoT applications in designing and develo…
