Background To assess the risk and severity of IBS in a population of TMD patients. Material and Methods Subjects for the study group were recruited from patients attending the Dental Clinic. Health controls (HC) were recruited among patients' friends and clinic staff. All subjects filled in the RDC/TMD questionnaire and the ROME III questionnaire for the diagnosis of IBS. The IBS Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS) was used to evaluate the severity of each case of IBS. Categorical variables were compared through the Chi square test. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the association between constipation severity, productivity losses and healthcare utilization in a national sample of Italian patients with chronic non-organic constipation (CC). METHODS: We enrolled 878 outpatients with CC. Clinical and demographic data were collected by physicians during clinical examinations. To determine the accuracy of this approach, we analyzed data from 10 double-blind, placebo-controlled, gluten challenge trials, comprising 1312 adults. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders, having a prevalence of 12%-30% in the general population. Most patients with IBS attribute their symptoms to adverse food reactions. We review the role of diet in the pathogenesis of IBS and the importance of dietary factors in the management of these patients.
