Looking into a text: an analysis of a document "Min al-Gaza'ir al mugahida ila huggag bayt Allah al-haram (1957)" of the Gabhat al-tahrir al-watani a…

2013

This study offers a particular interpretation of an important document in Arabic language of 1957 entitled “Min al-Gaza'ir al mugahida ila huggag Bayt Allah al-haram". The object of the analysis is a historical record: not a simple datum, but a fragment of universe. In fact it needs to be grasped through the means of questioning; and it is clear that the answer and/or the answers will be given in accordance with the used procedure; the tools that I employ as a scholar of the field and the language I resort to. In this sense, I consider worth noting that Contemporary history of Algeria is here intended as an integral part of the Arab-Islamic World; even if some representative Algerian histor…

Analysing Revolution-like Processes in North Africa: A Historical Perspective of the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s

2021

The recent Arab Spring (which started in 2010 and is still going on) has been considered the beginning of a transition process for some Arab countries and in particular North African countries. In the last years a bulimic production of books and articles have investigated the Arab Spring by mainly focusing on events from the 2011 onwards and/ or proposing a single narrow-minded perspective. A broader historical comparative approach is needed for investigating and underlining both similarities and differences among the different target countries and their revolutionary and/or revolutionary-like events/processes, by also contributing (and this is the aim of this article) to shed light on “und…

In facebook we trust? Social media and political engagement, between Italian and Tunisian youth

2020

The article shows the results of a qualitative research on the use of social media by Tunisian and Italian youth, which is part of a broader project on Mediterranean digital culture. More precisely, this work is based on a series of focus groups, and aims at analyzing political participation, engagement and citizen journalism, by focusing on two countries deeply affected by digital propaganda – in Italy, with the growing popularity of Five Star Movement among young people, and in Tunisia with all aftermaths of the Arab Spring. Twelve focus groups were realized, with a total of 96 interviewed. As a result, we will consider two main findings: a critical use of social media, on the one hand, a…

Islam politico e Guerra fredda: alternative islamiste in Iraq e Libano (1967-1991)

2019

This article seeks to evaluate the impact of Cold War strategies and superpowers initiative in the Middle East with a particular reference on the evolution of political Islam. Based on a storiographical analysis, the article also focuses its attention on two particular cases of the Shia social and political thought (the Lebanese Hezbollah and Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr writings) in order to show how these two particular expressions of the Islamic political thought have been influenced by the Cold War and what was their positioning in this regards. In the first paragraph a particular attention is dedicated to the applicability of Cold War paradigm to the Middle East and in this sense, by using H…

Damasco dal profumo soave

2004

The Biography of the Emir 'Ali b. al-amir 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jaza'iri: from Damascus to Libya (1911).

2017

In the frame of the subject proposed for this 27th UEAI Congress, I have decided to deal with the presence of maghāriba in the city of Damascus during the late 19th and the early 20th century, which is what I have been focusing for some years.1 In particular, I would like to deal with the system of relationships, contacts and mutual interactions between Maghrib and Mashriq in the late Ottoman period,2 through the biography of the Algerian Emir ʿAlī b. al-amīr ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jazāʾirī, who is considered zaʿīm min zuʿamāʾ al-islām wa raʾīs min ruʾasāʾihi for the resistance that he opposed to the Italian aggression against Libya in 1911 (al-ḥarb al-ṭarābulusiyya ṣafḥa min ḥayāt al-buṭūla wa-l…
