Mitochondrial DNA haplotype frequencies in natural and experimental populations of Drosophila subobscura.
1998
Abstract The evolution of Drosophila subobscura mitochondrial DNA has been studied in experimental populations, founded with flies from a natural population from Esporles (Majorca, Balearic Islands, Spain). This population, like other European ones, is characterized by the presence of two very common (>96%) mitochondrial haplotypes (called I and II) and rare and endemic haplotypes that appear at very low frequencies. There is no statistical evidence of positive Darwinian selection acting on the mitochondrial DNA variants according to Tajima's neutrality test. Two experimental populations, with one replicate each, were established with flies having a heterogeneous nuclear genetic back…
Volcano seismicity and ground deformation unveil the gravity-driven magma discharge dynamics of a volcanic eruption.
2015
Effusive eruptions are explained as the mechanism by which volcanoes restore the equilibrium perturbed by magma rising in a chamber deep in the crust. Seismic, ground deformation and topographic measurements are compared with effusion rate during the 2007 Stromboli eruption, drawing an eruptive scenario that shifts our attention from the interior of the crust to the surface. The eruption is modelled as a gravity-driven drainage of magma stored in the volcanic edifice with a minor contribution of magma supplied at a steady rate from a deep reservoir. Here we show that the discharge rate can be predicted by the contraction of the volcano edifice and that the very-long-period seismicity migrat…
A renewable energy mix to supply small islands. A comparative study applied to Balearic Islands and Fiji
2019
Abstract Power plants supplied by renewables are expanding around the world, increasing the sustainability of the energy sector. In this context, small islands are heavily reliant on fossil fuels. However, this paper shows that the same problem can be found also in small islands belonging to developed countries. To increase the energy sustainability of small islands, the authors assembled a simplified mathematical approach to evaluate the potential electricity production, exploiting the local available energy sources: solar, wind and sea wave. The mathematical model requires few information in input, such as climatic data about the local energy sources and technical features on the selected…
Interesting dematiaceous Hyphomycetes on Lodoicea maldivica dead frafments
2014
Two new species, Virgariella lodoicea and Cacumisporium oceanicum and a new record of Diplocladiella scalaroides from Seychelles islands are proposed. A species of Helicosporium which could not be determined is also described.i
Hypermethylator phenotype in sporadic colon cancer: study on a population-based series of 582 cases.
2008
Abstract The CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) is a distinct phenotype in colorectal cancer, associated with specific clinical, pathologic, and molecular features. However, most of the studies stratified methylation according to two subgroups (CIMP-High versus No-CIMP/CIMP-Low). In our study, we defined three different subgroups of methylation (No-CIMP, CIMP-Low, and CIMP-High) and evaluated the prognostic significance of methylation status on a population-based series of sporadic colon cancers. A total of 582 colon adenocarcinomas were evaluated using methylation-specific PCR for 5 markers (hMLH1, P16, MINT1, MINT2, and MINT31). No-CIMP status was defined as no methylated locus, CIMP-…
Comparison of the effect of non-polluted and underwater-volcano-polluted seawater on the corrosion resistance of different stainless steels
2015
This work compares the effect of non‐polluted and underwater‐volcano‐polluted seawater on the electrochemical behavior of two different alloys, notably an austenitic stainless steel (SS) and a duplex stainless steel. Polarization measurements, potentiostatic passivation tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and capacitance measurements were performed. Results show that the composition of the polluted seawater negatively affects the passivation kinetics of both AISI 316 SS and Alloy 900, decreasing the corrosion resistance of both alloys. Additionally, when both steels are compared, it can be concluded that passive films formed on Alloy 900 presented better protective properties than…
Piano di Gestione UNESCO Isole EOLIE
2008
Genome-wide parent-of-origin DNA methylation analysis reveals the intricacies of human imprinting and suggests a germline methylation-independent mec…
2014
Genomic imprinting is a form of epigenetic regulation that results in the expression of either the maternally or paternally inherited allele of a subset of genes (Ramowitz and Bartolomei 2011). This imprinted expression of transcripts is crucial for normal mammalian development. In humans, loss-of-imprinting of specific loci results in a number of diseases exemplified by the reciprocal growth phenotypes of the Beckwith-Wiedemann and Silver-Russell syndromes, and the behavioral disorders Angelman and Prader-Willi syndromes (Kagami et al. 2008; Buiting 2010; Choufani et al. 2010; Eggermann 2010; Kelsey 2010; Mackay and Temple 2010). In addition, aberrant imprinting also contributes to multige…
