Three Phages from a Boreal Lake during Ice Cover Infecting Xylophilus, Caulobacter, and Polaromonas Species
2023
Although the important role of microbes in freshwater is well understood, studies on phage–host systems in such environments during ice cover are completely lacking. Here, we describe the isolation and characterization of three new bacteriophages infecting Xylophilus sp., Caudobacter sp., and Polaromonas sp. from freshwater samples taken under the ice cover of Lake Konnevesi, Finland. Lumi, Kuura, and Tiera bacteriophages have tailed icosahedral virions and double-stranded DNA. Lumi is a siphophage with a genome of 80,496 bp, and Kuura and Tiera are podophages, and their genomes are 43,205 and 45,327 bp in length, resembling viruses in the class Caudoviricetes. Their host ranges were very l…
On the Dynamics of Fractional Visco-Elastic Beams
2012
With increasing advanced manufacturing process, visco-elastic materials are very attractive for mitigation of vibrations, provided that you may have advanced studies for capturing the realistic behavior of such materials. Experimental verification of the visco-elastic behavior is limited to some well-known low order models as the Maxwell or Kelvin models. However, both models are not sufficient to model the visco-elastic behavior of real materials, since only the Maxwell type can capture the relaxation tests and the Kelvin the creep tests, respectively. Very recently, it has been stressed that the most suitable model for capturing the visco-elastic behavior is the spring-pot, characterized …
Singing is what we do (together) - redefining "together" : A comparative study
2021
This article discusses the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on singing with children in schools by providing a descriptive analysis of a comparative look at children's experiences of their singing habits and emotional well-being during the first Covid-19 lockdown. Covid-19 has established itself as (for now) an ever-present variable in our daily lives. This paper offers a descriptive analysis of a comparative study of the Covid-19 lockdown(s) influence on children's singing habits and emotional well-being in Italy, Austria, and Finland. A survey was carried out on children and young people aged 10-20 from Austria, Finland, and Italy on how the Coronavirus lockdown has impacted thei…
