International audience; The most important form of damage in carbon fiber reinforced composite pressure vessels is the failure of the fibers however the rate of fiber failure is controlled by the viscoelastic nature of the matrix, which determines overall in-service lifetimes. This type of damage is very different from that encountered with metal pressure vessels and requires a detailed understanding in order to ensure reliability. Innovative proof testing methods based on these processes are necessary. The damage processes and the means of quantifying them are discussed. Heavy metal sorption in biosorbents – Using spent grain from the brewing industry

The sorption properties of brewer's spent grain (BSG) were assessed in terms of its usefulness in removing heavy metals from solutions. The specific objectives of the investigation involved studying sorption equilibrium and kinetics, assessing the influence of other cations on sorption efficiency, and examining the possibility of bed regeneration. The studies were carried out in a static system, with a constant ratio of solution volume to biosorbent mass, and using a flow through system. Membrane bioreactors for treatment of saline wastewater contaminated by hydrocarbons (diesel fuel): An experimental pilot plant case study

Abstract The paper reports the main results of an experimental campaign performed on a membrane bioreactor pilot plant designed to treat synthetic shipboard slops. The experimental campaign was divided into two phases: salinity acclimation up to 20 g NaCl L −1 (Phase I) and hydrocarbon (diesel fuel) dosing (Phase II). The observed results show that the carbon removal was not severely affected by the wastewater features. Conversely, respirometric tests showed that nitrification was strongly affected by the salinity (33% of nitrification efficiency at 20 g NaCl L −1 – Phase I) as a result of the salinity in the autotrophic biomass. Effect of preparation method on the properties of poly(methyl methacrylate)/mesoporous silica composites

The preparation method of a polymer composite and the filler loading are amongst the factors that influence the properties of the final composites. This article studies the effect of these factors on the thermal stability and thermal degradation kinetics of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/mesoporous silica (MCM-41) composites filled with small amounts of MCM-41. The PMMA/MCM-41 composites were prepared through in situ polymerisation and melt mixing methods, with MCM-41 loadings of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt.%. Kinetic study of ionic liquid synthesis in a microchannel reactor

Abstract A microchannel reaction system, mainly consisting of a micromixer and a tubular reactor, was used to investigate the kinetics of butylation of 1-methyl-imidazole [MIM] for the synthesis of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([BMIM]Br). The low variance (σθ2 = 0.019) of the residence time distribution, measured by a step stimuli–response tracer method, implies that this reaction system could be regarded as a plug flow reactor. As a fast and reliable method, the titration of bromide was established to determine the yield of [BMIM]Br. Mediation of Elicitin Activity on Tobacco Is Assumed by Elicitin-Sterol Complexes

Elicitins secreted by phytopathogenic Phytophthora spp. are proteinaceous elicitors of plant defense mechanisms and were demonstrated to load, carry, and transfer sterols between membranes. The link between elicitor and sterol-loading properties was assessed with the use of site-directed mutagenesis of the 47 and 87 cryptogein tyrosine residues, postulated to be involved in sterol binding. Dynamic Effects on Reaction Rates in a Michael Addition Catalyzed by Chalcone Isomerase. Beyond the Frozen Environment Approach

We present a detailed microscopic study of the dynamics of the Michael addition reaction leading from 6'-deoxychalcone to the corresponding flavanone. The reaction dynamics are analyzed for both the uncatalyzed reaction in aqueous solution and the reaction catalyzed by Chalcone Isomerase. By means of rare event simulations of trajectories started at the transition state, we have computed the transmission coefficients, obtaining 0.76 +/- 0.04 and 0.87 +/- 0.03, in water and in the enzyme, respectively. Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes constitute an essential xenobiotic metabolizing system that regulates the elimination of lipophilic compounds from the body. Revealing Atom-Radical Reactivity at Low Temperature Through the N + OH Reaction

International audience; More than 100 reactions between stable molecules and free radicals have been shown to remain rapid at low temperatures. In contrast, reactions between two unstable radicals have received much less attention due to the added complexity of producing and measuring excess radical concentrations. We performed kinetic experiments on the barrierless N(4S) + OH(2Π) → H(2S) + NO(2Π) reaction in a supersonic flow (Laval nozzle) reactor. We used a microwave-discharge method to generate atomic nitrogen and a relative-rate method to follow the reaction kinetics.
