Photocatalytic reactions by transition-metal (V, Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, Mo, or W) loaded TiO2 (M-TiO2) powders suspended in aqueous solutions of methanol, (S)-lysine (Lys), or acetic acid were investigated. The photoactivities of various samples were compared with the rate constant (kr) of recombination of photoexcited electrons and positive holes determined by femtosecond pump–probe diffuse reflection spectroscopy (PP-DRS). As a general trend, increased loading decreased the rate of formation of the main products (H2 , pipecolinic acid (PCA), and CO2) under UV (>300 nm) irradiation, and the effect became more intense on increasing the loading. The reaction kinetics for the group transfer polymerization (GTP) of tert-butyl methacrylate (TBMA) using a silyl ketene acetal initiator and a nucleophilic catalyst are investigated. The reaction is shown to be of first order in both monomer and catalyst concentrations. The “livingness” of this system appears to be influenced by the reaction temperature. At temperatures above −20°C, deactivation is observed, with its severity increasing with increasing temperature. This deactivation is attributed to a depletion of catalyst by side reactions. Dependence of O2 diffusion dynamics on pressure and temperature in silica nanoparticles

An experimental study of the molecular O2 diffusion process in high purity non-porous silica nanoparticles having 50 m2/g BET specific surface and 20 nm average radius was carried out in the temperature range from 127 to 177 °C at O2 pressure in the range from 0.2 to 66 bar. The study was performed by measuring the volume average interstitial O2 concentration by a Raman and photoluminescence technique using a 1,064 nm excitation laser to detect the singlet to triplet emission at 1,272 nm of the molecular oxygen in silica. Investigation of Solid State Diffusion Processes Involved in the Zinc Oxide Sulfidation Reaction

Sulfidation of undoped and aluminum doped zinc oxide materials has been performed by TGA under a H2S atmosphere in order to evaluate the impact of the doping element on sulfidation reaction kinetics and mechanism. The presence of aluminum seems to slow-down the reaction kinetics. This phenomenon might be explained by a modification of the solid state diffusion processes involved in ZnO sulfidation reaction and the related ZnS outward growth, assuming the presence of aluminum atoms inside ZnO and ZnS phases. Role of the reagents consumption in the chaotic dynamics of the Belousov-Zhabotitinsky oscillator in closed unstirred reactors

Chemical oscillations generated by the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction in batch unstirred reactors, show a characteristic chaotic transient in their dynamical regime, which is generally found between two periodic regions. Chemical chaos starts and finishes by following a direct and an inverse Ruelle–Takens–Newhouse scenario, respectively. In previous works we showed, both experimentally and theoretically, that the complex oscillations are generated by the coupling among the nonlinear kinetics and the transport phenomena, the latter due to concentration and density gradients. A multicompartment model for open-loop control of glucose in insulin-dependent diabetics

This paper describes a model that has been developed for individually adjusted therapy management in insulin-dependent diabetics. The multicompartment model considers all relevant aspects of glucose kinetics and its dependence on insulin. The structure of the model reflects that of the physiological system. Its parameters can be classified into (a) general parameters that are independent of the individual, (b) classifying parameters that are related systematically to the individual, and (c) distinguishing parameters. In vivo triglyceride synthesis in subcutaneous adipose tissue of humans correlates with plasma HDL parameters

Backgrounds and aims: Low concentrations of plasma HDL-C are associated with the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Here we aimed to explore the relationship between the in vivo fractional synthesis of triglycerides (fTG) in subcutaneous (s.q.) abdominal adipose tissue (AT), HDL-C concentrations and HDL particle size composition in non-diabetic humans. Combination of ozonation and photocatalysis for purification of aqueous effluents containing formic acid as probe pollutant and bromide ion

The treatment by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) of waters contaminated by organic pollutants and containing also innocuous bromide ions may generate bromate ions as a co-product. In the present work heterogeneous photocatalysis and ozonation have individually been applied and in combination (integrated process) to degrade the organic compounds in water containing also bromide anions.
