Survivin is regulated by interleukin-4 in colon cancer stem cells

Colorectal cancer has provided an important model to test the stem cell hypothesis of cancer origin, which implies that cancer arises as a result of genetic aberrations in stem cells leading to deregulation of the proliferation/differentiation balance. We and others have demonstrated that, similarly to other solid tumors, colon carcinogenesis and progression are dictated by highly apoptosis-resistant stem-like cells. Our data have suggested that protection from apoptosis is achieved by autocrine production of interleukin-4 (IL-4) through up-regulation of anti-apoptotic mediators. Dihydro-orotate dehydrogenase activity was demonstrated in the hyphae of the fungusNeurospora crassa by a cytochemical technique. The activity was slightly stronger in the hyphal tips thus demonstrating the more intense metabolic activity in these parts of the mycelium. Several control reactions showed that the staining reaction was specific.
Filipin labelling and intramembrane particles on the membranes of early and later autophagic vacuoles in Ehrlich ascites cells

Cholesterol and intramembrane particle distribution on autophagic vacuole membranes was studied in Ehrlich ascites cells using filipin labelling and freeze-fracture electron microscopy. Unsaturated fatty acids were stained using imidazole-buffered osmium tetroxide. Autophagocytosis was induced with vinblastine, and early autophagic vacuoles were accumulated by lowering the ATP level in the cells with iodoacetate. Filipin labelling was observed in the limiting membranes of later, apparently hydrolase-containing autophagic vacuoles, whereas the most newly-formed, doublemembrane limited vacuoles were not labelled. Pētījuma mērķis bija izpētīt sāpju dzīvesspēka lomu psiholoģiskajā labklājībā pieaugušajiem ar hronisko sāpju pieredzi. Pētījumā piedalījās 116 Latvijas iedzīvotāji, 79 (68,1%) sievietes un 37 (31,9%) un vīrieši vecumā no 25-60 gadiem (M=42,13, SD=10,55), ar hronisko sāpju pieredzi no trīs mēnešiem līdz gadam un vairāk (neklīniskā izlase). Pētījumā tika izmantota Sāpju dzīvesspēka skala (Pain Resilience Scale, Ankawi et al., 2017), pētījuma ietvaros notika skalas adaptācija latviešu valodā, kā arī Psiholoģiskās labklājības aptauja (Scales of psychological well – being, Ryff, 1989, latv. val. Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the methods used for the synthesis or generation of paramagnetic hydride complexes. It subsequently surveys the known classes of stable open-shell hydride complexes. The chapter also reveals the fundamental properties of the M–H bond in open-shell compounds and finally examines the various established decomposition modes. The classical picture of the terminal M–H bond is that where the hydrogen atom is orbital and combines with an appropriate metal-fragment hybrid orbital to generate the bonding and antibonding combinations.
