The seroepidemiology of pertussis in Australia during an epidemic period
2006
Studying the epidemiology of pertussis and impact of differing vaccine schedules is difficult because of differing methods of case ascertainment. The advent of internationally standardized serological diagnosis for recent infection has allowed comparison of age-specific pertussis infection among European countries and was applied in Australia at the time of a major national epidemic. In 1997 and 1998, a nationally representative serum bank using residual sera from diagnostic laboratories was established. Measurement of pertussis toxin (PT) IgG level was conducted by a reference laboratory using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay standardized for a number of European countries. A titre of …
Is acute heart failure a distinctive disorder? An analysis from BIOSTAT-CHF
2020
Aims: \ud This retrospective analysis sought to identify markers that might distinguish between acute heart failure (HF) and worsening HF in chronic outpatients.\ud \ud Methods and Results: \ud The BIOSTAT‐CHF index cohort included 2516 patients with new or worsening HF symptoms: 1694 enrolled as inpatients (acute HF) and 822 as outpatients (worsening HF in chronic outpatients). A validation cohort included 935 inpatients and 803 outpatients. Multivariable models were developed in the index cohort using clinical characteristics, routine laboratory values, and proteomics data to examine which factors predict adverse outcomes in both conditions and to determine which factors differ between ac…

Control of murine hair follicle regression (catagen) by TGF‐β1in vivo
2000
The regression phase of the hair cycle (catagen) is an apoptosis-driven process accompanied by terminal differentiation, proteolysis, and matrix remodeling. As an inhibitor of keratinocyte proliferation and inductor of keratinocyte apoptosis, transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) has been proposed to play an important role in catagen regulation. This is suggested, for example, by maximal expression of TGF-beta1 and its receptors during late anagen and the onset of catagen of the hair cycle. We examined the potential involvement of TGF-beta1 in catagen control. We compared the first spontaneous entry of hair follicles into catagen between TGF-beta1 null mice and age-matched wild-type …
Proceso migratorio, condiciones laborales y salud en trabajadores inmigrantes en España (proyecto ITSAL)
2009
Entrevista a 2434 trabajadores (57,4% varones).
Participatory Ergonomics: A Model for the Prevention of Occupational Musculoskeletal Disorders
2009
Peritoneal cavity phagocytes from the teleost sea bass express a glucocorticoid receptor (cloned and sequenced) involved in genomic modulation of the…
2005
Abstract To gain further insight into the role of cortisol in Wsh innate immune responses, we cloned and sequenced a 2592 bp cDNA from sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) peritoneal leukocytes (PCLs) encoding a glucocorticoid receptor (DlGR1). The deduced aminoacid sequence displayed that DlGR1 belong to a multigenic family of steroid hormone receptors, and exhibited high homology (80%) to the Burton’s mouth breeder (Haplochromis burtoni) HbGR1. The DlGR1 functional domains presented homologies with those of several vertebrate species. In situ hybridization assay revealed that DlGR1 was expressed in macrophages and neutrophils from the peritoneal cavity. Since in a previous paper, sea bass PCL …
A Decision Support Tool for Appropriate Glucose-Lowering Therapy in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
2015
Contains fulltext : 152084.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) BACKGROUND: Optimal glucose-lowering therapy in type 2 diabetes mellitus requires a patient-specific approach. Although a good framework, current guidelines are insufficiently detailed to address the different phenotypes and individual needs of patients seen in daily practice. We developed a patient-specific decision support tool based on a systematic analysis of expert opinion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on the American Diabetes Association (ADA)/European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2012 position statement, a panel of 12 European experts rated the appropriateness (RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method) of tre…
Noise levels in a dental teaching institute: a matter of concern!
2011
Objective: To measure and assess the noise levels produced by various dental equipments in different areas of a dental institution and to recommend improvements if noise levels are not within permissible limits. Material and Methods: Sound levels were measured at three different areas of a dental institution where learning and teaching activities are organized. The sound level was measured using a sound level meter known as ‘decibulolmeter’. In each area the noise level was assessed at two positions-one, at 6 inches from the operators ear and second, at the chairside instrument trolley. Noise levels were also assessed from a central location of the clinic area when multiple equipments were …
Can stress biomarkers predict preterm birth in women with threatened preterm labor?
2017
Background: Preterm birth is a major paediatric challenge difficult to prevent and with major adverse outcomes. Prenatal stress plays an important role on preterm birth; however, there are few stress-related models to predict preterm birth in women with Threatened Preterm Labor (TPL). Objective: The aim of this work is to study the influence of stress biomarkers on time until birth in TPL women. Methods: Eligible participants were pregnant women between 24 and 31 gestational weeks admitted to the hospital with TPL diagnosis (n = 166). Stress-related biomarkers (a-amylase and cortisol) were determined in saliva samples after TPL diagnosis. Participants were followed-up until labor. A paramet…
