STR analysis of artificially degraded DNA--results of a collaborative European exercise.

2003

Degradation of human DNA extracted from forensic stains is, in most cases, the result of a natural process due to the exposure of the stain samples to the environment. Experiences with degraded DNA from casework samples show that every sample may exhibit different properties in this respect, and that it is difficult to systematically assess the performance of routinely used typing systems for the analysis of degraded DNA samples. Using a batch of artificially degraded DNA with an average fragment size of approx. 200 bp a collaborative exercise was carried out among 38 forensic laboratories from 17 European countries. The results were assessed according to correct allele detection, peak heig…

Are the leukocyte telomere length attrition and telomerase activity alteration potential predictor biomarkers for sporadic TAA in aged individuals?

2014

A large variability in occurrence, complications, and age/gender manifestations characterizes individual susceptibility of sporadic thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA), even in subjects with the same risk factor profiles. The reasons are poorly understood. On the other hand, TAA pathophysiology mechanisms remain unclear than those involved in abdominal aorta aneurysms. However, recent evidence is suggesting a crucial role of biological ageing in inter-individual risk variation of cardiovascular diseases, including sporadic TAA. Biological age rather than chronological age is a better predictor of vascular risk. Relevant assumptions support this concept. In confirming this evidence and our preli…

Virulence and Molecular Typing of Vibrio harveyi Strains Isolated from Cultured Dentex, Gilthead Sea Bream and European Sea Bass

2003

Vibrio harveyi was isolated from internal organs or ulcers of diseased and apparently healthy gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) cultured in several fish farms located on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The prevalence of the bacterium was significantly higher in European sea bass than in gilthead sea bream, and was closely related to the season in both fish species, occurring almost exclusively on warm months (June to November). After phenotypic characterization, a selection of forty five isolates from gilthead sea bream, sea bass, and several isolates previously obtained from common dentex (Dentex dentex) of the same area, were molecularly type…

The spatial distribution of bacteria in Grana-cheese during ripening.

2012

The microbial composition and its spatial distribution of Grana Trentino, a hard Parmesan-like cheese, was determined, from vat milk to cheese. After cutting along the vertical axis of the cheese wheels, three layers were sampled diagonally across the cheese: under the cheese rind, an intermediate section and the cheese core. After two different ripening periods (9 and 18 months), the cheese samples were analysed using traditional culture dependent and culture independent methods. Milk samples were dominated by mesophilic and psychrophilic bacterial counts. Thermophilic bacteria (Lactobacillus helveticus) were found in high amounts in cooked whey and natural whey starter cultures. After 9 m…

Increased Expression of Integrin and Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Genes During Autograft Fusion in the SpongeGeodia cydonium

1999

Recently cDNAs coding for cell surface molecules have been isolated from sponges. The molecules for alpha-integrin, galectin, and receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK), obtained from the marine sponge, Geodia cydonium, have been described earlier. In the present study also the cDNA for one putative beta-integrin has been identified from G. cydonium. The deduced aa sequence comprises the characteristic signatures, found in other metazoan beta-integrin molecules; the estimated size is 95,215 Da. To obtain first insights into the molecular events which proceed during autograft fusion, the expressions of these genes were determined on transcriptional and translational level. The cDNAs as well as antib…

Key Disulfide Bonds in an Insect Hormone Binding Protein: cDNA Cloning of a Juvenile Hormone Binding Protein of Heliothis virescens and Ligand Bindin…

1995

The hemolymph juvenile hormone binding protein (JHBP) from the early fifth instar larvae of Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) has been purified, and three cDNA clones for this protein have been isolated from a fat body cDNA library constructed in bacteriophage λZAP XR. The deduced amino acid sequence of the full-length clone predicts a mature protein consisting of 224 residues, a molecular mass of 24 976 Da, and a p/ of 5.29. Comparison of the amino acid sequence to that of the previously described JHBP from Manduca sexta shows 51 % overall identity with highly conserved N- and C-terminal regions. One of the three clones bound photoactivatable analogs of juvenile hormones with mu…

#EEGManyLabs

2021

There is growing awareness across the neuroscience community that the replicability of findings about the relationship between brain activity and cognitive phenomena can be improved by conducting studies with high statistical power that adhere to well-defined and standardised analysis pipelines. Inspired by recent efforts from the psychological sciences, and with the desire to examine some of the foundational findings using electroencephalog-raphy (EEG), we have launched #EEGManyLabs, a large-scale international collaborative replication effort. Since its discovery in the early 20th century, EEG has had a profound in-fluence on our understanding of human cognition, but there is limited evid…

IT treniņu uzdevumu veidošana

2018

Darba mērķis ir izveidot IT treniņu uzdevumus jeb virtuālās laboratorijas, datortīklu apguvei laboratoriju izstrādes vidē. Darba gaitā ir iepazīta OpenStack orķestrēšanas komponentes Heat veidņu veidošana un apgūta virtuālo laboratoriju veidošana OpenStack vidē. Darba laikā tika izveidotas strādājošas virtuālās laboratorijas ar atšķirīgu to infrastruktūras sistēmu.

Pasākuma tīmekļa vietnes izstrāde

2015
