Setting up Effective Management in Rural Development
Not only companies but also entire regions are faced with an intensifying international competition. Hence, regions are constantly forced to adapt their social and economic structures to changing conditions. The competitiveness of regions rests largely on networking and cooperation of various regional actors from the private, public and third sector. Such rather weakly institutionalised forms of steering are often subsumed under the heading of regional governance. However, regional governance does not evolve automatically. It is the subject of sound management under very complex conditions. Political opportunity structures can have a high impact on the establishment of regional governance. …
A systematic review and meta-analysis of the benefits of school-based, peer-led interventions for leaders
2022
The aim of our systematic review and meta-analysis was to quantitatively synthesise the effects of school-based peer-led interventions on leaders’ academic, psychosocial, behavioural, and physical outcomes. Eligible studies were those that: (i) evaluated a school-based peer-led intervention using an experimental or quasi-experimental study design, (ii) included an age-matched control or comparison group, and (iii) evaluated the impact of the intervention on one or more leader outcomes. Medline, Sportdiscus, Psychinfo, Embase, and Scopus online databases were searched on the 24th of October, 2022 which yielded 13,572 results, with 31 included in the narrative synthesis and 12 in the meta-ana…
An Examination of the Relationship Between Coaches’ Transformational Leadership and Athletes’ Personal and Group Characteristics in Elite Youth Soccer
2021
There is a growing body of the literature highlighting the positive impact of transformational leadership behaviours across contexts, including sport. However, there is a lack of knowledge of this relationship within elite sport settings. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between elite youth athletes’ perceptions of coaches’ transformational coaching-behaviours and variables that have been linked to transformational leadership in other settings (i.e., group cohesion, motivational climate, self-regulation of learning and athlete satisfaction). Norwegian elite youth soccer players (n= 753) selected into the national talent development program completed que…
Servant Leadership in a Nordic Healthcare Organization
2022
The aim of this chapter is to deepen the understanding of employees’ perceptions of servant leadership (SL) in the context of healthcare organizations. The empirical findings are based on the analysis of qualitative data collected in a Nordic healthcare organization that supports SL. Based on theory-driven content analysis, perceptions of SL were evaluated based on Spears’ definition of SL, which this chapter supports and develops. The findings show that SL seems to be a suitable approach for leadership in a healthcare organization. Its ethical and human-centered values especially seem to fit the context of healthcare. peerReviewed
How Virtuous is Your Firm? A Checklist
2009
Scholars are noting a change in the way business is being conducted. Many firms --one scholar estimates the number at 15%-- are concerned about values rather than focusing exclusively on maximizing profits. This new kind of capitalism considers factors such as societal needs, quality, needs of employees, and environmental sustainability in business decision making. In addition, a large number of consumers (approximately 70 million Americans), known as values-driven consumers, prefer doing business with companies that have values. This paper provides a checklist that can be used by firms to determine whether or not they are indeed virtuous; if they are not, the authors provide reasons why th…

Principals’ perceptions about collective competences in shared leadership contexts
2022
This article aims to understand how principals perceive collective competences in their schools’ shared leadership contexts. This study investigates collective competences through two intersected models: attribute and relational models. The data comprise interviews conducted with 12 Finnish principals in comprehensive and secondary schools who practiced shared modes of leadership. Due to the Finnish school culture emphasising collaboration, the principals were expected to be able to broadly consider the collective side of competences in their schools. The data wer…
Feasibility of a Responsibility-Based Leadership Training Program for Novice Physical Activity Instructors

Most coaches and instructors would like to teach more than just sport skills to their athletes and children. However, to promote athletes’ or children’s holistic development and teach them to take responsibility and lead, requires the coaches and instructors to first master the skills themselves. Therefore, feasible, high quality leadership training programs where coaches and physical activity instructors are taught to teach and share leadership are needed. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the feasibility of a leadership training program to optimize it and to determine whether to proceed with its evaluation. In the leadership training program, eight Finnish novice physical activ…
Elites in Finnish energy policy and biogas as a motor vehicle fuel
2011
The intent of this research was to find out what is the state of Finnish energy policy when reviewing it from the vantage point of biogas as a motor vehicle fuel. It seemed, according to previous research, that Finnish energy policy is lead by an elite and that there was a lack in transparency of energy policy. Therefore, in addition to researching the question of transparency and the possible elite structure, the research questions were: Who are these elites? Why do they exist and what makes others not members of the elite? Within what context do they exist? The question “Who?” will define the elite structure in Finland. “Why?” will tell us why this elite structure exists, thus giving poss…
