Incidence and anatomy of gaze-evoked nystagmus in patients with cerebellar lesions.
2011
Background: Disorders of gaze-holding—organized by a neural network located in the brainstem or the cerebellum—may lead to nystagmus. Based on previous animal studies it was concluded that one key player of the cerebellar part of this gaze-holding neural network is the flocculus. Up to now, in humans there are no systematic studies in patients with cerebellar lesions examining one of the most common forms of nystagmus: gaze-evoked nystagmus (GEN). The aim of our present study was to clarify which cerebellar structures are involved in the generation of GEN. Methods: Twenty-one patients with acute unilateral cerebellar stroke were analyzed by means of modern MRI-based voxel-wise lesion-behavi…
Impaired cognitive control in patients with brain tumors
2021
Though the assessment of cognitive functions is proven to be a reliable prognostic indicator in patients with brain tumors, some of these functions, such as cognitive control, are still rarely investigated. The objective of this study was to examine proactive and reactive control functions in patients with focal brain tumors and to identify lesioned brain areas more at "risk" for developing impairment of these functions. To this end, a group of twenty-two patients, candidate to surgery, were tested with an AX-CPT task and a Stroop task, along with a clinical neuropsychological assessment, and their performance was compared to that of a well-matched healthy control group. Although overall ac…
Mammogram segmentation by contour searching and massive lesion classification with neural network
2004
The mammography is the most effective procedure for an early diagnosis of the breast cancer. In this paper, an algorithm for detecting massive lesions in mammographic images will be presented. The database consists of 3762 digital images acquired in several hospitals belonging to the MAGIC-5 collaboration. A reduction of the surface under investigation is achieved, without loss of meaningful information, through segmentation of the whole image, by means of a ROI Hunter algorithm. In the following classification step, feature extraction plays a fundamental role: some features give geometrical information, other ones provide shape parameters. Once the features are computed for each ROI, they …
Large eddy simulation model for wind-driven sea circulation in coastal areas
2013
Abstract. In the present paper a state-of-the-art large eddy simulation model (LES-COAST), suited for the analysis of water circulation and mixing in closed or semi-closed areas, is presented and applied to the study of the hydrodynamic characteristics of the Muggia bay, the industrial harbor of the city of Trieste, Italy. The model solves the non-hydrostatic, unsteady Navier–Stokes equations, under the Boussinesq approximation for temperature and salinity buoyancy effects, using a novel, two-eddy viscosity Smagorinsky model for the closure of the subgrid-scale momentum fluxes. The model employs: a simple and effective technique to take into account wind-stress inhomogeneity related to the …
Prevalence of oral lesions in HIV patients related to CD4 cell count and viral load in a Venezuelan population
2006
Imaging of calcified hepatic lesions: spectrum of diseases
2021
Hepatic calcifications have been increasingly identified over the past decade due to the widespread use of high-resolution Computed Tomography (CT) imaging. Calcifications can be seen in a vast spectrum of common and uncommon diseases, from benign to malignant, including cystic lesions, solid neoplastic masses, and inflammatory focal lesions. The purpose of this paper is to present an updated review of CT imaging findings of a wide range of calcified hepatic focal lesions, which can help radiologists to narrow the differential diagnosis.
Caliber-persistent Artery: A Case Report
2019
ABSTRACT The caliber-persistent labial artery (CPLA) is a vascular anomaly in which a main branch of the artery penetrates the submucosal area of the lip without loss of caliber. It commonly presents as an elevated soft tissue mass and is often pulsatile on manual palpation. Clinical suspicion is important, given the risk of bleeding, either from slight trauma or accidentally if lack of awareness leads to excision of the lesion owing to an incorrect diagnosis. CPLA should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any lesion affecting the lip, especially to differentiate from mucocele or squamous cell carcinoma. This particular case of CPLA in the upper lip of a girl presents a both unu…

Increased endocannabinoid levels reduce the development of precancerous lesions in the mouse colon
2007
Colorectal cancer is an increasingly important cause of death in Western countries. Endocannabinoids inhibit colorectal carcinoma cell proliferation in vitro. In this paper, we investigated the involvement of endocannabinoids on the formation of aberrant crypt foci (ACF, earliest preneoplastic lesions) in the colon mouse in vivo. ACF were induced by azoxymethane (AOM); fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and cannabinoid receptor messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) levels were analyzed by the quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR); endocannabinoid levels were measured by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry; caspase-3 and caspase-9 expressions were measured by W…
