Teachers’ Identity Tensions and Related Coping Strategies : Interaction With the Career Stages and Socio-Political Context

2022

When external requirements conflict with teachers’ personal beliefs and values, the resulting internal struggles can lead to identity tensions. Contributing to discussion on teachers’ identity development in a challenging context, this study investigated teacher identity tensions and related coping strategies in Hong Kong. We conducted 21 semi-structured interviews with qualified teachers and then performed a deductive thematic analysis of the data. We categorised the identity tensions as positioned on the micro or macro level, and distinguished the coping strategies as emotion-focused or problem-focused behaviours. The identity tensions and related coping strategies seemed to be associated…

Metáforas visuales en los mundos virtuales. El caso de NANEC 2010/11

2011

2016

The article focuses on Finnish proverbs as a part of contemporary colloquial written language in everyday use and context. University Students’ Approaches to Making the Most of Their Study Time

2022

This article explores university students’ approaches to and positions with regard to making the most of their study time. The article discusses how various normative societal expectations around students’ use and management of time feature in their talk about how they organise their everyday lives. The research is based on thematic interviews (n = 28) that focused in detail on students’ day-to-day activities that were generated with students from two sets of generalist study fields in three regional Finnish universities. Anticipation as Platform Power : The Temporal Structuring of Digital Everyday Life

2023

This article explores anticipation as a temporal structure in digital platforms. It contributes to the growing research of platformisation of everyday life by focusing on temporality as a central dimension of platform power, a key mechanism tying participants by structuring intimacies, socialities, and relations that platforms enable and engender. The article shows how the temporality of foreboding, prospecting and speculating about one’s own and other’s social media presence and actions permeates the user experience. Studying media diaries and interviews with participants from different social and occupational groups (politicians, actors, the unemployed, undocumented migrants), the article…

Sensory testing in new product development: working with children

2015

Abstract This chapter aims at briefly reviewing applications of sensory descriptive testing methods with children, as well as their limits in relation to the cognitive development of children. Children’s sensory perceptions and preferences may differ from those of adults, which may make working directly with children a must for successful product development, at least at some stages of product development. However, most reported studies with children have characterized their preferences. Some studies have used discrimination tests and ranking tasks to gain knowledge about differences among products, or about sensory abilities development. A much smaller number of studies have involved child…

Does Addiction Therapy Change the Hedonistic Temporal Orientation and the Satisfaction with the Patients’ Life?

2016

The current chapter deals with the problem of alcohol addicted patients. During their therapy, they described a sense of emptiness, low level of life satisfaction and difficulties in enjoying their lives. Those problems often caused them to return to psychoactive substance use. A longitudinal study of alcohol dependent patients (N=45) in the process of addiction therapy was conducted. The research questionnaires measured selected aspects of psychological well-being (operationalized as important areas of life and temporal orientation). The first measurement was made at the beginning of a patient’s addiction therapy. The second measurement was carried out in the last week of the patient's the…

Effect of oil lamination between plasticized starch layers on film properties

2016

International audience; To reduce the hygroscopic character of biodegradable starch-based films, rapeseed oil was incorporated by lamination (starch-oil-starch 3-layers technique). The lipid lamination followed by starch solution casting step induced an emulsion type structure of dried films. Composite films are more opalescent and glossier than fatty free starch films. For all the films, structure is heterogeneous in the cross-section only. Adding fat induced a twice decrease of the tensile strength. Thermal gravimetry analysis did not show differences between films with and without oil. Lipid reduced the moisture absorption particularly at higher RH as well as the surface swelling index, …

Introduzione al volume Crescere/Svilupparsi

2020
