Cinema e parole
2022

The importance of being Cognate
2022
This study will introduce a tool – termed NLPYTALY – for the automatictreatment of naturally-occurring texts in Italian. The tool distinguishesconstructs with an ordinary verb from those with a support verb. Mean-ing is rendered by using cognate (i.e. etymologically related) semantic roles (CSR), which differ from other roles because they are expressed withthe content morpheme of the predicate licensing arguments. CSRs offer anumber of advantages: they can be semi-automatically derived and use the who-does-what model. Besides, they facilitate the detection of anaphoric chains and produce a foreground/background opposition of the namedentities. Finally, they permit the construction of a chro…
Asymmetries in path encoding in Sicilian: A diachronic overview
2017
This talk aims at describing the encoding of path within the system of spatial relations in Sicilian, an Italo-Romance language spoken in Sicily and its satellite islands. In general terms, spatial relations in Sicilian remain largely unexplored in the light of the current linguistic theories. As a consequence, the first point addressed in the proposed description is the comparison of Sicilian data with the cross-linguistic scenario. It is generally argued in the relevant literature that the encoding of path appears to be less autonomous compared to source, goal, and location at the cross-linguistic level, and its encoding is frequently based on location (see Stolz 1992). In Sicilian, the s…
Passive in motion: the Early Italian auxiliary andare (‘to go’)
2014
The Italian construction andare ‘to go’ + (transitive) past participle expresses a passive meaning when occurring in a perfective past tense (1), whereas it conveys an additional deontic sense of (impersonal) obligation when used in an imperfective tense (2) (Bertinetto 1991; Giacalone Ramat 2000). A further constraint on the passive reading is represented by the semantics of the participle, necessarily expressing a negative value of ‘loss/destruction’; this value is moreover conceived as ‘non-intentional’, as the impossibility to express the agent (*da qualcuno) shows: (1) I documenti andarono distrutti. (*da qualcuno) the documents go. prf.3pl destroy.pst.ptcp.pl (by someone) ‘The documen…
