Exercise intolerance at high altitude (5050 m): critical power and W'.

Abstract The relationship between work rate (WR) and its tolerable duration (tLIM) has not been investigated at high altitude (HA). At HA (5050 m) and at sea level (SL), six subjects therefore performed symptom-limited cycle-ergometry: an incremental test (IET) and three constant-WR tests (% of IET WRmax, HA and SL respectively: WR1 70 ± 8%, 74 ± 7%; WR2 86 ± 14%, 88 ± 10%; WR3 105 ± 13%, 104 ± 9%). Significance of hyperlactatemia in acute hypnotic drug poisoning

Lactate concentration, fibrinogen and fibrin(ogen) -- degradation-products in central venous blood were analysed in 35 unconscious patient with acute hypnotic drug poisoning (HDP) and compared with the results in 13 healthy control persons undergoing the same degree of forced diuresis via central venous catheters. Blood samples were taken on admission and at 12 h intervals up to 36 h after admission. Patients with HDP were attributed to the categories of moderate intoxications (n = 17) and severe intoxications (n = 18) according to their clinical condition. Purpose: To investigate the effects of including repeated sprints in a weekly low-intensity (LIT) session during a 3-week transition period on cycling performance 6 weeks into the subsequent preparatory period (PREP) in elite cyclists. A Comparative Study of Blood Lactate Tests in Swimming*

Three different modes of lactate tests were studied. Eleven male competitive swimmers performed the tests (n.100 m, n.300 m, 2.100m + 2.400 m) within 5 days. Swimming velocity (V) vs blood lactate (BLa) and V vs heart rate (HR) curves were averaged. In V vs BLa comparisons, the BLa values of 4 mmol.l-1 in 2.400 m, 3 mmol.l-1 in n.300 m, and 2 mmol.l-1 in n.100 m modes were found to correspond to the same V. Although the resting BLa values were similar before the testing occasions, the initial BLa value in very easy swimming was lower in the n.300 m than in the n.100 m mode. Ventilatory threshold during incremental running can be estimated using EMG shorts

The present study examined whether shorts with textile electromyographic (EMG) electrodes can be used to detect second ventilatory threshold (V(T2)) during incremental treadmill running. Thirteen recreationally active (REC) and eight endurance athletes were measured for EMG, heart rate, blood lactate and respiratory gases during VO(2max) test (3 min ramps, 1 km·h(-1) increments). V(T)(2), onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA) and EMG threshold (EMG(T)) were determined. Case study: effect of handrim diameter on performance in a paralympic wheelchair athlete.

This study, with a top T-52 class athlete, determines the relationship between stroke frequency (SF) and push time (PT) and wheelchair velocity (Wv) using different handrim diameters (HD) and the effect of different HDs on the athlete’s heart rate (HR) and blood lactate (LACT) at competition speeds. Wv shows a linear-direct relationship with SF but a linear-inverse relationship with PT (p < .001 in both cases). Using bigger handrims (0.37 m instead of 0.36 m), SF increases 6%, while PT decreases 27% (at 24 Km·h–1). Plasma catecholamine responses to four resistance exercise tests in men and women

The plasma adrenaline ([A]) and noradrenaline ([NA]) concentration responses of nine men and eight women were investigated in four resistance exercise tests (E80, E60, E40 and E20), in which the subjects had to perform a maximal number of bilateral knee extension-flexion movements at a given cycle pace of 0.5 Hz, but at different load levels (80%, 60%, 40% and 20% of 1 repetition maximum, respectively).
