Are you ready to encounter foreign patients with infectious diseases? : developing nursing students’ language skills through educational co-creation
2019
An educational co-creation project can provide valuable information about the current needs in working life and engage students in a meaningful way thus promoting their learning outcomes significantly. The nursing students at Laurea University of Applied Sciences were involved in an educational co-creation project whose aim was to increase their knowledge of infectious diseases and to develop the contents of their language course “English for Health Care”. The project was carried out through innovative methods: a learning café and online educational material for professionals in the field. This collaboration involved the infectious diseases ward of Aurora Hospital, nursing students and lect…

A case study of a British ERASMUS student in Italy
2013
This article focuses on the shaping of social identities and emotions of one British young woman who spent a Year Abroad (YA) in Italy as an ERASMUS student. I have examined her negotiation and (re)construction of social identities during her experience abroad from a poststructuralist perspective, which sees individuals’ identities as dynamic and changeable sites of struggles (Norton Pierce, 1995 and 2000). In order to analyse the participant's accounts of her language learning and emotional experiences during her YA I have used the notion of emotional investment developed by Pavlenko (2012). This notion has helped me to understand how, why and to what extent the participant in the study ga…
Musical experiences in learning English as a foreign language
2009
Materiaali koostuu neljän suomalaisen nuoren aikuisen haastatteluista. Tutkielmassa vastataan kysymyksiin: 1) Miten musiikki on ollut läsnä haastateltavien englannin oppimisen historiassa? 2) Millaisia kokemuksia oppijoilla on vieraan kielen, erityisesti englannin, oppimisesta mu…

“I started reading even though I didn’t understand much”: The significance of reading and writing fanfiction in extra-curricular language learning
2018
Kouluajan ulkopuolella tapahtuu oppimista jatkuvasti, erityisesti englannin kielen suhteen. Lingua francana toimivalta englannin kieleltä on lähes mahdoton välttyä, koska se on osa monen jokapäiväistä elämää esimerkiksi eri medioiden kautta. Suurin osa tästä oppimisesta tapahtuu alitajuisesti, eikä henkilö tee tietoista valintaa oppia altistuessaan kielelle tavalla tai toisella. Lukemisen merkitys kielen oppimisessa on laajasti tutkittu aihe (ks. esim. Krashen, 1989; Krashen and Bland, 2014). Yleinen näkemys on, että kohdekielellä lukeminen tukee kielen oppimista. Lukeminen ei kuitenkaan tyypillisesti korostu opetussuunnitelmissa muita oppimismenetelmiä enemmän. Vieraan kielen oppimisessa m…

There were two main aims: (1) to create a short project that was inspiring, stimulating and enjoyable that could be transferable to other high education institutions; and (2) to provide a training that cou…
Frequency Change Patterns across Proficiency Levels in Japanese EFL Learner Speech
2014
This study investigated the overall patterns of variation across seven oral proficiency levels of 1,263 Japanese EFL learners and native English speakers. The largest spoken learner corpus in Japan, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology Japanese Learner English (NICT JLE) Corpus was used for the analysis. This corpus consists of transcribed interviews with 1,281 learners and contains over one million running words of spoken English. The transcriptions were compared with data gathered from 20 native En…
Un computer non più calcolatore. Linguistica e informatica
2004
