This ethnographically-oriented study followed the experiences of six (later four) students on an international master’s programme in Finland. Intercultural Awareness of Iranian English Language Learners : An Exploration

The present paper reports on a qualitative study investigating how Iranian learners of English as a foreign language understand culture and the extent to which this understanding meets the needs of efficient intercultural communication. In order to gather data, in-depth semistructured interviews were conducted with eight participants. Maternal parenting styles, homework help, and children’s literacy development in language minority and Finnish-speaking families

The aim of this study was to examine the role of mothers’ (language minority mothers, LM, n = 49, and Finnish-speaking mothers, MP, n = 368) parenting styles and maternal help with their children’s homework in the children’s (mean age 11.43 years) literacy skills at fourth grade in Finland. In addition, the moderating effect of a child’s gender on this relationship was investigated. The results showed that the LM mothers used psychological control more than MP mothers. Furthermore, the more LM mothers used warmth and psychological styles of parenting, the more they helped their daughters, not sons, with homework. The thesis explores bilingual adolescents’ language use, linguistic resources, and language practices in interaction at three junior high schools in Haparanda, a Swedish town on the country’s northeastern border with Finland. A comparison is also made with interaction among bilingual adolescents at two Sweden-Finnish junior high schools in Stockholm and at one Swedish-speaking junior high school in Helsinki. This work focuses on the study of the meanings conveyed by two visual perception verbs (mirar and veure) in Central Catalan within the theoretical framework of cognitive semantics. Our objective is twofold: (i) to analyze and describe them in order to establish metaphorical and metonymic semantic projections; and (ii) to determine the intralinguistic distribution of the non-prototypical meanings of these verbs.
