Parole che curano. Dalla magia alla talking cure (passando per la retorica)
2019
The article proposes a reflection on the ability of words to soothe pain and, more generally, the ability of language to have (positive or negative) effects on our lives. This ambivalent power represents an interesting phenomenon to better understand the role that language plays in the construction (and/or dissolution) of our social bonds. The reflection is guided by some intuitions of psychoanalysis which have their roots in ancient Greek culture and especially in classical rhetoric.
Guessing Meaning From Word Sounds of Unfamiliar Languages: A Cross-Cultural Sound Symbolism Study
2019
Sound symbolism refers to a non-arbitrary relationship between the sound of a word and its meaning. With the aim to better investigate this relationship by using natural languages, in the present cross-linguistic study 215 Italian and Polish participants were asked to listen to words pronounced in 4 unknown non-indo-European languages (Finnish, Japanese, Swahili, Tamil) and to try to guess the correct meaning of each word, by choosing among 3 alternatives visualized on a computer screen. The alternatives were presented in the mother tongue of participants. Three different word categories were presented: nouns, verbs and adjectives. A first overall analysis confirmed a semantic role of sound…
First World War Diaries: Making the Private Public
2020
This article analyses several World War I Diaries written by soldiers on the Front. Starting with the circumstances of publication and their effects on the text, the article addresses the passage of these very private texts into public life, before turning to the role played by the diaries for the soldiers who write them. Studies of the diary as a genre are used to show how war diaries fit into the more general genre. Finally the article turns to the reception of these works, by studying what part literary distance may play for the soldiers keeping a diary, and by arguing that the task of making sense of these texts has been transferred to present-day readers.

Kvanttikoneohjelmointi
2016
In this paper the current state of quantum programming languages was studied. The objective was to do a survey of existing languages, their differences, and the reasons for their development, even though practical…

2020
Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje wybrane strategie nazewnicze, które wpływają na powstawanie terminów fachowych w branży kolejnictwa. Jednym z jego celów jest ukazanie, że forma tych pojęć jest w głównej mierze uzależniona od takich aspektów jak ekonomia językowa i ‘tendencja do uwidaczniania’. Krótki rys historyczny i szczególne podkreślenie znaczenia kognitywnej funkcji języków fachowych tworzą ramy niniejszej analizy, z jednej strony podkreślając wagę omawianego zagadnienia, z drugiej zaś wskazując na wielowymiarowy charakter uzyskanych wyników.

Abstract This article is dedicated to present the most common word-formation strategies in German railway specialist terminology. The presentation of the most productive morphological nomination strategies in the analysed area is preceded by a short historical outline of the railway industry in Germany. The adumbration of the historical background and hints regarding the current EU environmental plans for railways are intended to expose the importance and relentless currency of the analysis undertaken here. The presented examples, which were extracted from the most extensive industry terminology database, RaiLLexic, have been correlated with their Polish equivalents. This contrastive proced…

Differences between students' PISA reading literacy scores and grading for mother tongue and literature at school : A geostatistical analysis of the …
2016
In Finland, the national Core Curriculum for Basic Education defines the learning objectives along with the numerical grade to be given for good competence in each school subject in the final phase of basic education. While serving as a guideline for schools and teachers, it should also ensure an objective evaluation of all students in Finland. In this paper, we take a closer look at the equality of student assessment in Finland in the light of student performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2009. This study investigates the relationship between the grades given to students in mother tongue and literature at different schools and the same students’ reading l…
