Transition state ensemble optimization for reactions of arbitrary complexity.

2015

In the present work, we use Variational Transition State Theory (VTST) to develop a practical method for transition state ensemble optimization by looking for an optimal hyperplanar dividing surface in a space of meaningful trial collective variables. These might be interatomic distances, angles, electrostatic potentials, etc. Restrained molecular dynamics simulations are used to obtain on-the-fly estimates of ensemble averages that guide the variations of the hyperplane maximizing the transmission coefficient. A central result of our work is an expression that quantitatively estimates the importance of the coordinates used for the localization of the transition state ensemble. Starting fro…

DR Tauri: Temporal variability of the brightness distribution in the potential planet-forming region

2015

We investigate the variability of the brightness distribution and the changing density structure of the protoplanetary disk around DR Tau, a classical T Tauri star. DR Tau is known for its peculiar variations from the ultraviolet (UV) to the mid-infrared (MIR). Our goal is to constrain the temporal variation of the disk structure based on photometric and MIR interferometric data. We observed DR Tau with the MID-infrared Interferometric instrument (MIDI) at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) at three epochs separated by about nine years, two months, respectively. We fit the spectral energy distribution and the MIR visibilities with radiative transfer simulations. We are able to r…

The Vlasov Limit for a System of Particles which Interact with a Wave Field

2008

In two recent publications [Commun. PDE, vol.22, p.307--335 (1997), Commun. Math. Phys., vol.203, p.1--19 (1999)], A. Komech, M. Kunze and H. Spohn studied the joint dynamics of a classical point particle and a wave type generalization of the Newtonian gravity potential, coupled in a regularized way. In the present paper the many-body dynamics of this model is studied. The Vlasov continuum limit is obtained in form equivalent to a weak law of large numbers. We also establish a central limit theorem for the fluctuations around this limit.

A large Streamer Chamber muon tracking detector in a high-flux fixed-target application.

1999

Arrays of limited streamer tubes of the Iarocci type were deployed in our experiment at CERN as part of a forward muon detector system with provisions for the beam to pass through the center of each panel in the array. A total of 16 4 m x 4 m panels were assembled with inductive readout strips on both sides of each panel. An active feedback system. was deployed to regulate the high voltage to the streamer tubes to insure a constant efficiency for minimum ionizing particles. The arrays were operated in this environment for over five years of data taking. Streamer tube track-reconstruction efficiencies and tube replacement rates are reported. Point field models for the galaxy point pattern modelling the singularity of the two-point correlation function

2002

There is empirical evidence that the two-point correlation function of the galaxy distribution follows, for small scales, reasonably well a power-law expression $\xi(r)\propto r^{-\gamma}$ with $\gamma$ between 1.5 and 1.9. Nevertheless, most of the point field models suggested in the literature do not have this property. This paper presents a new class of models, which is produced by modifying point fields commonly used in cosmology to mimic the galaxy distribution, but where $\gamma=2$ is too large. The points are independently and randomly shifted, leading to the desired reduction of the value of $\gamma$.

Perturbativity and mass scales in the minimal left-right symmetric model

2016

The scalar sector of the minimal Left-Right model at TeV scale is revisited in light of the large quartic coupling needed for a heavy flavor-changing scalar. The stability and perturbativity of the effective potential is discussed and merged with constraints from low-energy processes. Thus the perturbative level of the Left-Right scale is sharpened. Lower limits on the triplet scalars are also derived: the left-handed triplet is bounded by oblique parameters, while the doubly-charged right- handed component is limited by the h → γγ, Zγ decays. Current constraints disfavor their detection as long as WR is within the reach of the LHC.

Multiscaling Properties of Large-Scale Structure in the Universe

1995

The large-scale distribution of galaxies and galaxy clusters in the universe can be described in the mathematical language of multifractal sets. A particularly significant aspect of this description is that it furnishes a natural explanation for the observed differences in clustering properties of objects of different density in terms of multiscaling, the generic consequence of the application of a local density threshold to a multifractal set. The multiscaling hypothesis suggests ways of improving upon the traditional statistical measures of clustering pattern (correlation functions) and exploring further the connection between clustering pattern and dynamics.

Bilarge neutrino mixing and Abelian flavor symmetry

2012

We explore two bilarge neutrino mixing Anzatze within the context of Abelian flavor symmetry theories: (BL1) sin theta(12) similar to lambda, sin theta(13) similar to lambda, sin theta(23) similar to lambda, and (BL2) sin theta(12) similar to lambda, sin theta(13) similar to lambda, sin theta(23) similar to 1 - lambda. The first pattern is proposed by two of us and is favored if the atmospheric mixing angle theta(23) lies in the first octant, while the second one is preferred for the second octant of theta(23). In order to reproduce the second texture, we find that the flavor symmetry should be U(1) x Z(m), while for the first pattern the flavor symmetry should be extended to U(1) x Z(m) x …

Efficient finite difference formulation of a geometrically nonlinear beam element

2021

The article is focused on a two-dimensional geometrically nonlinear formulation of a Bernoulli beam element that can accommodate arbitrarily large rotations of cross sections. The formulation is based on the integrated form of equilibrium equations, which are combined with the kinematic equations and generalized material equations, leading to a set of three first-order differential equations. These equations are then discretized by finite differences and the boundary value problem is converted into an initial value problem using a technique inspired by the shooting method. Accuracy of the numerical approximation is conveniently increased by refining the integration scheme on the element lev…

Inclusive Search for Squark and Gluino Production inpp¯Collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2009

We report on a search for inclusive production of squarks and gluinos in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV, in events with large missing transverse energy and multiple jets of hadrons in the final state. The study uses a CDF Run II data sample corresponding to 2 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The data are in good agreement with the standard model predictions, giving no evidence for any squark or gluino component. In an R-parity conserving minimal supergravity scenario with A{sub 0} = 0, mu < 0 and tan beta = 5, 95% C.L. upper limits on the production cross sections in the range between 0.1 pb and 1 pb are obtained, depending on the squark and gluino masses considered. For gluino …
