E-Government Challenges and the Role of Political Leadership in Indonesia:  The Case of Sragen

2008

In general, developing countries are lagging behind in e-government adoption compared to developed countries. Within Indonesia, there is a huge disparity in e- government implementation between districts. This study presents e-government challenges and the role of political leadership in the rural district of Sragen, one of the leading districts in implementing e-government in the country. The study focuses on the supply-side of e- government, and categorises the challenges in three main areas; management, infrastructure, and human factors. Initiatives taken to deal with these challenges are presented and strong political leadership is found to play an important role.

Final Reflections: Global Challenges from Innovation and Connectivity

2020

Lattemann et al. summarize the discussions in the edited book on Huawei goes Global—with Vol. I examining the major global threads caused by the rise of tech-giant Huawei. They recap the debate about the tensions between China and the Western world about global leadership, geopolitical power, national security, ideological, and economic threats, global connectivity, and about the shape of the upcoming technological world order. The culminating point is the question about the link between Huawei and the Chinese Government. The 5G standard, pushed by Huawei, has the power to change the world. The closeness of the ties between Huawei and the Chinese Government will decide if the world will end…

Functionalized halloysite nanotubes for enhanced removal of lead(II) ions from aqueous solutions

2018

In this study, environmental friendly halloysite nanotubes and their amino derivatives were used as adsorbent materials for lead(II) ions. The adsorption ability of both nanomaterials towards Pb2+ ions has been studied in NaClaq, at I = 0.1 mol L−1, in the pH range 3–6. Moreover, the effect of ionic strength on the adsorption process was evaluated at the pH of maximum efficiency of the adsorbent materials. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments were carried out by using the Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (DP-ASV) technique to check the metal ion concentration in solution after contact with the two adsorbents. Different isotherm and kinetic equations were used to fit the experi…

European leaders unmasked: Covid-19 communication strategy through Twitter

2020

[EN] The coronavirus disease Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic is exacting a huge toll on individuals, families, communities, and societies across the world. The study of public communication is a key aspect for slowing the spread of the virus and therefore reducing the death rate. This article analyses political leaders' crisis communication during the Covid-19 pandemic of the most affected European countries, Boris Johnson (United Kingdom), Emmanuel Macron (France), Pedro Sanchez (Spain) and Giuseppe Conte (Italy), in addition to Tedros Adhanom as a representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Ursula Von der Leyen President of the European Union (EU). The study focuses on the vi…

The human side of leadership: exploring the relationship between servant leadership, organisational facilitators and happiness at work

2018

Although human resource management (HRM) research has established a significant relationship between leadership styles and different attitudinal outcomes, few studies have considered the important role of organisational facilitators as a more proximal outcome of servant leadership to explain happiness at work (HAW). This paper explores the relationships between servant leadership, organisational facilitators and HAW, based on the leader-member exchange (LMX) and job-demands resources (JD-R) theories. Individual-level analyses from a sample of 189 machine operators revealed that organisational facilitators fully mediate the relationship between servant leadership and HAW. The discussion revi…

Happy-Productive Teams and Work Units: A Systematic Review of the ‘Happy-Productive Worker Thesis’

2019

The happy-productive worker thesis (HPWT) assumes that happy employees perform better. Given the relevance of teams and work-units in organizations, our aim is to analyze the state of the art on happy-productive work-units (HPWU) through a systematic review and integrate existing research on different collective well-being constructs and collective performance. Research on HPWU (30 studies, 2001-2018) has developed through different constructs of well-being (hedonic: team satisfaction, group affect; and eudaimonic: team engagement) and diverse operationalizations of performance (self-rated team performance, leader-rated team performance, customers' satisfaction, and objective indicators), t…

Cardiac pacing in premature infants and neonates: steroid eluting leads and automatic output adaptation

1999

Abstract Background . Appropriate generator and lead selection as well as techniques of implantation are most important aspects of cardiac pacing in the extremely young patient. Here we report the clinical results using a new technique with automatic output adaptation based on evoked response in combination with steroid-eluting epicardial leads in small children. Methods . One neonate and 2 premature infants underwent permanent pacemaker implantation because of congenital high-degree atrioventricular block or postoperative complete heart block, respectively. Steroid-eluting epicardial leads and a multiprogrammable pacemaker with automatic output adaptation were used. Results . Intermuscular…

Archaeometrical study of paleometallurgical materials from the archaeological site “Cerro de las Balsas — Chinchorro” (La Albufereta, Alacant, Spain)

2008

An Iberian archaeological site located in the east of Spain is one of the most important cupellation centers found in the 4th century b.c. Different metallurgical materials were found in the archaeological site as minerals, cast slags, forged slags, metallic lead, cupella fragments and bronzes. Also was found reverbs remains used for cupper-based materials and cupellation procedure, and hearth forge remains for obtained iron material. The recuperated samples were studied by comparing samples of the same type of material by macroanalysis and microanalysis. The microanalysis and quantitation of the different archaeological materials was carried out by SEM/EDX. The information provides about t…

Rainfall energy harvester

2015

This chapter provides a detailed study on the harvest of the energy contained in raindrops by means of piezoelectric transducers. The energy harvester has the role of an electric source, able to recharge storage devices of small electronic components, such wireless sensors, by using the vibrational energy released by the drops hitting the transducer, reducing in such a way the chemical waste of conventional batteries. In technical literature, diverse studies agree on the level of suitable generated voltage on the electrodes of a piezoelectric transducer subjected to rainfall, but a complete characterization on the supplied power is still missing. This work, also to limit optimistic forecast…
