The competitiveness of welfare systems analyzed through equity: a comparison between Italy and France

2009

The following reflections start off from a comparative research on the implementation in different European countries of the regional european policies. Leaving a sector conception of community policies apart and, on the contrary, defending their interdependence with national policies, the author suggests that the execution processes of European structural funds may be affected by welfare systems spread nationwide. In particular, we think that social equity meant in a procedural significance as a political and economic arrangement of the different welfares and as an indicator of their collective legitimacy, represents the condition that, still distinguishing French and Italian welfares, sla…

Practices of leisure and life projects among young students in Palermo

2011

Practices of leisure and life projects among young students in Palermo The recent sociological literature on leisure time has pointed out practices of leisure faceted and ambivalent that help to explain some of the main contradictions of modernity. (Lo Verde, 2009, 2011; Roberts, 2006). The interweaving between the practices for the self-realization and the practices characterized by collective and common uses of the leisure time puts in evidence the crucial role that in their structuring have the framework conditions in which social actors live. The existence of social contexts characterized – as already included by Eisenstadt (Eisenstadt, 1973) – by forms of de-differentiation makes more …

Navigating multiple logics: Legitimacy and the quest for societal impact in science

2022

Academic scientists are encouraged to pursue research that delivers both scientific and societal impact. This may involve a search for alternative mechanisms of social approval which lead to endorsement of scientists’ research goals. We explore how scientists mobilise and accumulate different forms of legitimacy, which might favour their participation in practices related to innovation and societal impact. We propose three specific sources of scientific legitimacy: i) scientists’ social networks (research-related legitimacy ties), ii) prominence in the relevant academic community (reputation-based legitimacy); and direct contact with the primary beneficiaries of the research (beneficiary-ba…

Climate change, consumer lifestyles and legitimation strategies of sustainability-oriented firms

2021

Abstract This study explores the links between climate change, consumer lifestyles, and legitimation strategies of sustainable firms. Our findings offer new insight into this under-researched area based on qualitative case studies of four Nordic firms operating in industrial and consumer contexts. We find that climate change consciousness is a major driver for all case firms’ sustainability-focused operations, but the dynamics differed. Achieving sociopolitical legitimacy emerges as an important factor for the case firms operating in the energy sector, especially as it connects to government incentives and regulative pressures. However, cognitive legitimacy is increasingly important for the…

Organizational Legitimacy and Stakeholder Trust in the Organization: A Feed-Forward Relationship

2018

The main goal of this study is to enlarge the understanding of the concept of legitimacy. In recent decades, organizational legitimacy has received a great deal of attention from researchers who have tried to establish how organizations acquire, manage, and use it. However, there is still no conceptual agreement on how organizational legitimacy should be understood and how it can be measured. This reflects the complexity in the literature about understanding this phenomenon and suggests research opportunities. This chapter aims to strengthen the understanding of the role legitimacy plays in organizations by reviewing the related literature and analyzing the relationship between legitimacy a…

The Legitimacy of the Media Industry – What do Advertisers Expect?

2013

AbstractAs the media industry is globally affected by changes, we fill a gap that exists in understanding stakeholders’ expectations about the future of media by examining the perceived legitimacy of the media industry through advertisers’ expectations. Expectations contribute to stakeholder assessments and behavior, and unmet expectations may hinder organizational legitimacy. The qualitative study consisted of interviews of the 10 biggest media advertisers in Finland and social media observations. The results show that both traditional and new expectations may pose threats to the legitimacy of media, calling the industry to engage the central stakeholders in future planning and scenarios.
