Comparison of postoperative morbidity between piezoelectric surgery and conventional rotary instruments in mandibular third molar surgery: a split-mo…
2020
Background The extraction of impacted third molar teeth is a common procedure in maxillofacial surgery. The aim of this study was to compare of piezoelectric surgical technique with the one with conventional rotary instruments in terms of edema, trismus and pain, in mandibular third molar surgery. Material and Methods 20 individuals with symmetrically impacted lower mandibular third molars and 40 teeth were included in the study. Third molars on the left side of each patient were removed with piezosurgery, while the counterparts on the right side were removed with conventional rotary instruments. Postoperatively, the same antibiotic, analgesic, and mouthwash were recommended to both groups.…
Prevalence and characterization of maxillary sinus septa in a brazilian population
2019
Background The aim of this study was to assess the anatomic aspects of the maxillary sinus septa, by means of computed tomography images, in a Brazilian population. The results might be of clinical significance in sinus lift surgery planning. Material and methods In the study, 123 computed tomographs obtained from a private radiology clinic were used. They were analyzed by a single, trained and calibrated observer in order to evaluate the presence, quantity, localizations, dimensions, orientations and different characteristics in dentate, partially edentulous and completely edentulous individuals of the sinus septa. Results Of the individuals analyzed, 26% had a septum in the maxillary sinu…
Muscle training for bone strength
2006
The main function of bone is to provide the mechanical integrity for locomotion and protection; accordingly, bone mass and architecture are adjusted to control the strains produced by mechanical load and muscular activity. Age-related patterns involve peak bone mass during growth, a plateau in adulthood, and bone loss during aging. The decline in bone mass and structural integrity results in increased risk of fractures, particularly in post-menopausal women. Athletes competing in strength and power events, such as weight-lifting and jumping, have superior bone mass and structure compared with their untrained counterparts in all age groups. Exercise seems to be most effective during rapid gr…
Comparison of piezosurgery and conventional rotary instruments in schneider’s membrane sinus lifting: A pilot randomized trial
2020
Background The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the postoperative effects of the piezoelectric device and conventional rotary instruments in Schneider’s membrane sinus lifting procedure. Material and Methods Twenty patients requiring bilateral maxillary bone graft augmentation in the posterior maxillary region were selected. Piezoelectric surgery was performed on one side and conventional surgery with a rotary diamond bur on the other. Postoperative pain, swelling, edema, and mouth opening were evaluated at one hour and two and seven days after the procedures. All variables were submitted to Friedman or Wilcoxon tests at a 5% significance level. Results The comparison between gro…
On the topology of surfaces with the generalised simple lift property.
2020
In this paper, we study the geometry of surfaces with the generalised simple lift property. This work generalises previous results by Bernstein and Tinaglia, and it is motivated by the fact that leaves of a minimal lamination obtained as a limit of a sequence of properly embedded minimal disks satisfy the generalised simple lift property.
Extensible Wind Tower
2014
The diffusion of wind energy generators is restricted by their strong landscape impact. The PERIMA project is about the development of an extensible wind tower able to support a wind machine for several hundred kW at its optimal working height, up to more than 50 m. The wind tower has a telescopic structure, made by several tubes located inside each other with their axis in vertical direction. The lifting force is given by a jack-up system confined inside a shaft, drilled below the ground level. In the retracted tower configuration, at rest, tower tubes are hidden in the foundation of the telescopic structure, located below the ground surface, and the wind machine is the only emerging part …
Effects of strength training on muscle power and serum hormones in middle-aged and older men.
2001
Effects of 16-wk strength training on maximal strength and power performance of the arm and leg muscles and serum concentrations [testosterone (T), free testosterone (FT), and cortisol] were examined in 11 middle-aged (M46; 46 ± 2 yr) and 11 older men (M64; 64 ± 2 yr). During the 16-wk training, the relative increases in maximal strength and muscle power output of the arm and leg muscles were significant in both groups ( P < 0.05–0.001), with no significant differences between the two groups. The absolute increases were higher ( P < 0.01–0.05) in M46 than in M64 mainly during the last 8 wk of training. No significant changes were observed for serum T and FT concentrations. Analysis o…

Bone regeneration in diabetic patients. A systematic review
2019
Background Oral bone regeneration techniques (OBRT) attempt to provide the appropriate bone volume and density to correctly accomplish dental implant treatments. The objective was to determine whether differences exist in the clinical outcomes of these techniques between diabetic and non-diabetic patients, considering the level of scientific evidence. Material and Methods A systematic review following PRISMA statements was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane databases with the search terms: “Diabetes Mellitus”, “guided bone regeneration”, “bone regeneration”, “alveolar ridge augmentation”, “ridge augmentation”, bone graft*, “sinus floor augmentation”, “sinus floor elevation”, “sinu…
Discrete and differential homotopy in circular restricted three-body control
2010
The planar circular restricted three-body problem is considered. The control enters linearly in the equation of motion to model the thrust of the third body. The minimum time optimal control problem has two scalar parameters: The ratio of the primaries masses which embeds the two-body problem into the three-body one, and the upper bound on the control norm. Regular extremals of the maximum principle are computed by shooting thanks to continuations with respect to both parameters. Discrete and dierential homotopy are compared in connection with second order sucient conditions in optimal control. Homotopy with respect to control bound gives evidence of various topological structures of extr…
