Approaching the limits of multiple scattering decorrelation: 3D light-scattering apparatus utilising semiconductor lasers

Light scattering as a function of scattering angle can be regarded as a standard method to investigate the dynamics of dilute colloidal suspensions. Concentrated suspensions, which are of interest if interactions between the particles are to be investigated, usually show strong multiple scattering. Decorrelation of multiple scattered light, which isolates single scattering events at the expense of a reduced signal-to-noise ratio, has been proven to work using the two-colour crosscorrelation scheme.
Fourfold tetraurea calix[4]arenes--potential cores for the formation of self-assembled dendrimers.

Wide rim tetraurea calix[4]arenes monofunctionalized at the narrow rim by COOH or NH2 have been synthesized in five steps from t-butylcalix[4]arene tripropylether. Their covalent linkage via the narrow rim to a central calix[4]arene fixed in the 1,3-alternate conformation led to pentacalix[4]arenes 9 bearing four tetraurea derivatives in the cone conformation in a flexible tetrahedral arrangement. Their self-assembly via the formation of hydrogen bonded dimeric capsules has been studied under different conditions. A fourfold heterodimerisation of tetrakis-tetraurea derivatives of type 9 with tetratosylurea 10 has been confirmed by 1H NMR-spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering.

Deposition of the amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) in senile or diffuse plaques is a distinctive feature of Alzheimer's disease. The role of Abeta aggregates in the etiology of the disease is still controversial. The formation of linear aggregates, known as amyloid fibrils, has been proposed as the onset and the cause of pathological deposition. Yet, recent findings suggest that a more crucial role is played by prefibrillar oligomeric assemblies of Abeta that are highly toxic in the extracellular environment. Convection and thermodiffusion of colloidal gold tracers by laser light scattering

In a dynamic light scattering experiment, we have investigated the time intensity correlation function and the profile of the transmitted laser beam for organic dispersions of light absorbing colloidal particles containing tiny gold clusters. The correlation functions have been found to show a superposition of an exponential decay, corresponding to Brownian motion of the tracers, and well-defined oscillations. These oscillations are caused by convection due to local heating of the sample by the incident laser beam, which has been confirmed independently via measurements of the local temperature within the sample. Dynamic light scattering by preserved skimmed cow milk: A comparison of two-colour and three-dimensional cross-correlation experiments

We investigate the dynamic light scattering of preserved skimmed cow milk and compare the performance of a standard two-colour (2C) cross-correlation setup with the recently developed three-dimensional (3D) cross-correlation setup. Undiluted milk could only be investigated using the 3D setup because of too low signal-to-noise ratio of the 2C setup. A tenfold diluted milk, however, could be investigated by both setups, and comparable results for the dynamics of the sample were obtained thus demonstrating the equivalence of the decorrelation schemes. Abstract The neutral ligand 1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine (tp) has been employed to prepare a new coordination compound of Fe(III), [FeCl3(tp)2]n (1). Compound 1 was investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction and found to be a coordination polymer forming a ladder structure based on metal–ligand interactions, while H-bonding and aromatic interactions contribute to the supramolecular self-assembly into a 3D nanostructured material. Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to prepare diclofenac/hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) and diclofenac-loaded nanoparticles/HPMC films as potential systems for ocular delivery. Methods Two different concentration of the polymer were used: 1.5 and 2.0% w/v. Chitosan–hyaluronic acid nanoparticles were prepared by the ionotropic gelation technique. GdBO3 and YBO3 crystals under compression

High-pressure X-ray diffraction studies on nanocrystals of the GdBO3 and YBO3 rare-earth orthoborates are herein reported up to 17.4(2) and 13.4(2) GPa respectively. The subsequent determination of the room-temperature pressure-volume equations of state is presented and discussed in the context of contemporary publications which contradict the findings of this work. In particular, the isothermal bulk moduli of GdBO3 and YBO3 are found to be 170(13) and 163(13) GPa respectively, almost 50% smaller than recent findings. Spectra of the light scattered in the heterogeneous photonic crystal based on the thin triple-film opal, which was prepared by successive, convective force-assisted crystallisation of colloidal suspensions containing spheres of 374, 474 and again 374 nm in diameter, have been studied in the wavelength range of low order photonic bandgaps. Micellization properties of cardanol as a renewable co-surfactant

With the aim to improve the features of surfactant solutions in terms of sustainability and renewability we propose the use of hydrogenated natural and sustainable plant-derived cardanol as an additive to com- mercial surfactants. In the present study we demonstrated that its addition, in amounts as high as 10%, to commercial surfactants of different charge does not significantly affect surfactant properties. Conversely, the presence of hydrogenated cardanol can strongly affect spectrophotometric determination of CMC if preferential interactions with the dyes used take place.
