Medical English textbooks for Italian university students. Do they meet the Miur educational instructions about scientific English learning? Three wo…
2011
The ever increasing diffusion of English as the language of communication and scientific literature worldwide has made EMP (English for Medical Purposes) learning an integral part of medical students’ syllabuses. In medical English courses, teachers generally make use of textbooks which through a variety of activities usually involve all linguistic skills and provide students with the necessary means to communicate effectively and properly in their professional field. If we agree that a basic knowledge of general English should be assumed when undertaking any EMP course, then it follows that this specialist learning requires familiarity with a) specialised lexis and b) the morphosyntactic s…

Medical Metaphors in Economics News Articles in English and Italian
2017
As Lakoff and Johnson (1980: 3) state in Metaphors We Live by, “our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature.” From a linguistic point of view, metaphors not only exist in everyday language but in specialized discourse too, where they are frequently the result of interdisciplinary borrowings. The language of economics, replete with medical metaphors, is one of the most representative examples of this phenomenon. This paper offers a quantitative and qualitative analysis of medical metaphors in English and Italian economics news discourse, as no research seems to have been conducted so far on the topic from a cross-linguistic…
Metaphor they heal by?
2014
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of figurative speech in Medical English paying special attention to the use of metaphors in medical discourse. After briefly introducing the recent approaches to the study of metaphors based on psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic theories, we propose a qualitative analysis of selected medical texts with three aims: (1) at a lexical level, to find out how commonly doctors use metaphors to name pathologies, and to classify such metaphors in relation to their linguistic type; (2) at a psycholinguistic level, to investigate if metaphors, when used to denominate an illness, use metaphoric mappings; (3) at a communicative level, to establish if do…
Migration Discourse and the New Socially Constructed Meanings of the English Lingua Franca
2022
After the 1990s, the mass arrival of immigrants in Europe transformed the phenomenon of migration from a benefit into a problem and opened the debate to issues of first aid, security, expulsion and rejection. Even today, migrants are no longer seen as a socio-economic resource to be protected and regulated, but as a potential social problem affecting areas such as the economy, health and national security. The paper deals with the linguistically relevant literature about migration discourse (MD) and the role of English as lingua franca in public discourse related to the migration phenomenon. The latter part examines some traditional English key terms used to represent migrants since their m…
Introduction. The aesthetics of migration: Reversals of marginality and the socio-political translation turn
2018
Translation has imposed itself with determination as a condition for intercultural and linguistic exchanges among human beings living in distant parts of the globe for millennia. Not only has it contributed to the understanding of sociocultural structures, political systems, and technological and digital processes, but it has also encouraged our knowledge of the world – strengthening our awareness of marginalities, liminalities and otherness, and, certainly, widening our interlinguistic and intercultural, as well as translinguistic and transcultural horizons. This volume ranges across disciplines and subjects in translation studies, critical migration and border studies, the visual and perf…

Communicating Medical Information Online: The Case of Adolescent Health Websites
2020
In recent times, our understanding and practice of public health has been increasingly guided by technological advances generally based on governmental decisions (Green et al. 2009). Not only does the growth of a public system for protecting health hinge upon scientific discovery and dissemination of medical knowledge, but also the World Wide Web has considerably changed the health communication environment. This paper considers the online health information addressed to adolescents. Given that young people have difficulty accessing traditional health services, in theory, the Internet might offer them a more confidential and convenient access to an unprecedented level of information about a…
