L'aceto nel cuore
2012
In Plautus' theatre, a widespread element of the Roman material culture, as vinegar, becomes part of a well-structured metaphorical plane: from the image of sourness in feelings, which is long-running in the comic tradition, to the acetum as a metaphor of wit and cunning intelligence, lined with the meaning offered afterwards by Horace. In the Plautine comedy, vinegar, with effect from the gastronomic level, is connected with the representation of an acutus person, able to handle a situation full of unexpected events: in Pseudolus it results as a suitable synthesis of an effective simulatio. At the end we examine a passage of Rudens, in which 'salt' and 'vinegar' are conceived as necessary …
Two ways to metaphor comprehension in comparison: towards a bidimensional account of metaphor comprehension - poster
In this paper we will discuss the role of literal meaning and mental imagery in metaphor comprehension, showing their link and the problematic nature of these notions in pragmatics (Wilson & Carston 2019). We will try to overcome these problems by putting in dialogue the typology of metaphors offered by Carston (2010, 2018), based on the parameter of literal meaning, and the typology offered by Green (2017) based on the parameter of mental imagery. Carston (2018) recognizes the existence of two kinds of metaphors: (1) local metaphors such as “Giulio is a professor” in which a single lexical item - PROFESSOR - is modulated pragmatically; (2) metaphors such as “The yellow fog that rubs it…
How the Context Matters. Literal and Figurative Meaning in the Embodied Language Paradigm
2014
The involvement of the sensorimotor system in language understanding has been widely demonstrated. However, the role of context in these studies has only recently started to be addressed. Though words are bearers of a semantic potential, meaning is the product of a pragmatic process. It needs to be situated in a context to be disambiguated. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that embodied simulation occurring during linguistic processing is contextually modulated to the extent that the same sentence, depending on the context of utterance, leads to the activation of different effector-specific brain motor areas. In order to test this hypothesis, we asked subjects to give a moto…
The effect of cigar smoking on the lingual microcirculation
2005
The aim of this study was to analyze the lingual microcirculation in vivo and to evaluate the effects on it of cigar smoking, using computerized videocapillaroscopy. Twenty-five healthy nonsmokers and 25 healthy smokers were examined. For each subject we evaluated the visibility, course, tortuosity, and any images characteristic of capillary loops, as well as the possible presence of microhemorrhages, the average caliber of the capillary loops, and the number of capillary loops visible per square millimeter. The investigation of the lingual mucosa revealed capillary loops with a course parallel to the surface. In smokers, capillary loops had a smaller caliber (P < 0.001) and there was a hig…

Le spine di Afranio: a proposito di Afran. fr. 1 R.3
2022
In fr. I R.3 (Afranius’ Abducta) we can recognise an imagery connected to the rhetorical-philosophical Stoic tradition. Indeed, the adjective senticosus introduces the metaphor of thorns, a stylistic device associated with the Stoic sermo. This interpretation seems to be confirmed by Apuleius’ use of this adjective in Florida 18, which contains the famous ‘sophism of Protagoras’.
Quo plura possis, plura patienter feras. Agamennone modello di sapienza nelle Troiane di Seneca
2022
The paper deals with the quarrel between Pyrrhus and Agamemnon in the Troades, with an analysis of Greek and Latin antecedents, focusing in particular on the characterisation of the Achaean commander. The character of Agamemnon, who embodies the suffering of the defeated, shows a new model of royalty in line with Senecan ideology.
