Inter-individual variation in response to resistance training in cardiometabolic health indicators.

Resistance training (RT) may improve metabolic health; however, the extent of its effectiveness is constantly evaluated to assess improvements in the group means, thus obscuring the heterogeneous individual effects. This study investigated inter-individual variation in response to RT as reflected in metabolic health indicators and how age, sex, nutrition, and pre-training phenotypes are associated with such variabilities. PAI-1 Levels are Related to Insulin Resistance and Carotid Atherosclerosis in Subjects with Familial Combined Hyperlipidemia

Familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCH) is a primary atherogenic dyslipidemia with insulin resistance and increased cardiovascular risk. Plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity are associated with proinflammatory and atherothrombotic risk. Our aim was to study the role played by PAI-1 and MPO activity in the carotid atherosclerosis prevalence in FCH subjects. 36 FCH unrelated subjects (17 women) were matched by age and body weight with 36 healthy normolipidemic subjects (19 female). Skin-PAMPA: a new method for fast prediction of skin penetration.

The goal of this study was to develop a quick, reliable, and cost-effective permeability model for predicting transdermal penetration of compounds. The Parallel Artificial Membrane Permeability Assay (PAMPA) was chosen for this purpose, as it already has been successfully used for estimating passive gastrointestinal absorption and blood-brain barrier permeability. To match the permeability of the rate-limiting barrier in human skin, synthetic certramides, which are analogs of the ceramides present in the stratum corneum, were selected for the skin-PAMPA model. Influence of lipids and obesity on haemorheological parameters in patients with deep vein thrombosis.

It is not well established whether haemorheological alterations constitute independent risk factors for deep vein thrombosis (DVT).We have determined in 149 DVT patients and in 185 control subjects the body mass index (BMI), the haemorheological profile: blood viscosity (BV), plasma viscosity (PV), fibrinogen (Fg), erythrocyte aggregation (EA), erythrocyte deformability (ED) and plasma lipids. In the crude analysis BMI, Fg, PV, EA, triglycerides (TG) and ApoB were statistically higher and HDL cholesterol (HDL-Chol) statistically lower in DVT patients than in controls. α-Thalassemia Does Not Seem to Influence Erythrocyte Deformability in Sickle Cell Trait Carriers

Studies dealing with rheological red blood cell (RBC) behavior in sickle cell trait carriers are scarce. Moreover, the association with α-thalassemia (α-thal), which also modifies erythrocyte behavior, has not always been taken into account. We analyzed erythrocyte deformability by means of a shear stress diffractometer, along with hematological and biochemical parameters (glucose and plasma lipids), given their possible influence on erythrocyte deformability, in 14 sickle cell trait carriers and 23 healthy controls. Effects of an ultra-long-distance (1000 km) race on lipid metabolism

The influence was examined of ultra-long-distance running (1000 km race lasting 20 days) on changes in serum lipids. The 110 participants received two types of diet, a conventional Western diet and a wholesome vegetarian diet. Of the 55 finishers the serum concentration of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B and triglycerides decreased significantly during the first 8 days of the run, but rose again towards the end of the race without reaching pre-race levels. The high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol increased initially but decreased in the final days of the run. The values for apolipoprotein A-I were not correlated with HDL-cholesterol. The …

Inhibition of thromboxane biosynthesis and platelet function by simvastatin in type IIa hypercholesterolemia

Abstract Thromboxane A 2 (TXA 2 ) biosynthesis is enhanced in the majority of patients with type IIa hypercholesterolemia.
