p-Nitrophenolate: A Probe for Determining Acid Strength in Ionic Liquids

2009

In order to obtain an acidity scale in room-temperature ionic liquid solutions, the protonation equilibrium of sodium p-nitrophenolate in [bm(2)im][NTf(2)] and in [bmpyrr][NTf(2)], at 298 K, has been studied by means of spectrophotometric titration. Carboxylic acids differing in both structure and in water solution strength have been used. Data collected indicate that in the analyzed ionic liquid solutions carboxylic acids are less dissociated than in water solution. Furthermore, by virtue of a mutual interaction, the studied equilibrium seems to be affected by both the nature of the ionic liquids and the carboxylic acids.

Sustainable carbon–carbon bond formation catalyzed by new oxamate-containing palladium(II) complexes in ionic liquids

2013

Abstract New and versatile bis(oxamato)palladate(II) complexes of formula ( n -Bu 4 N) 2 [Pd(2-Mepma) 2 ]·4H 2 O ( 1a ) and ( n -Bu 4 N) 2 [Pd(4-Mepma) 2 ]·2H 2 O·MeCN ( 1b ) ( n -Bu 4 N +  = tetra- n -buthylammonium, 2-Mepma =  N -2-methylphenyloxamate and 4-Mepma =  N -4-methylphenyloxamate) have been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Each palladium(II) ion in 1a and 1b is four-coordinate with two oxygen and two nitrogen atoms from two fully deprotonated oxamate ligands building a centrosymmetric square planar surrounding. Their catalytic role has been investigated for both Heck and Suzuki coupling reactions using a series of aryl…

Green conditions for the Suzuki reaction using microwave irradiation and a new HNT-supported ionic liquid-like phase (HNT-SILLP) catalyst

2014

A new catalytic system based on modified halloysite nanotubes was employed in the Suzuki reaction under microwave irradiation. A set of solvents, times and bases was screened and the best experimental conditions were obtained when the reactions were carried out for 10 min in water–ethanol at 120 °C in presence of K2CO3 as base. Good recyclability was observed. The new catalytic system was employed using either 1 mol% or 0.1 mol%. The palladium catalyst displayed good activity, allowing the synthesis of several biphenyl compounds in high yield working with only 0.1 mol% palladium loading. The application of microwave irradiation decreased the reaction time and also improved conversion with r…

A fast method for determining low-molecular-mass aliphatic carboxylic acids by high-performance liquid chromatography–atmospheric pressure chemical i…

2006

A fast quantitative high-performance liquid chromatographic separation method with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometric detection (HPLC-APCI-MS) was developed for the determination of low-molecular-mass aliphatic mono- and dicarboxylic acids typically present in different industrial process waters. A mixture of glycolic, lactic, a-glucoisosaccharinic, oxalic, maleic, fumaric, succinic, malic, glutaric, methylsuccinic, and adipic acids was separated using an RP chromatographic system. Adipic acid was used as an internal standard to calculate correlation coefficients for the acids studied. The chromatographic analysis of these acids was primarily carried out by means of…

Quantitative determination of the main aliphatic carboxylic acids in wood kraft black liquors by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrom…

2006

The versatile characterization of organic material and especially of the significant aliphatic hydroxy acids in black liquor is of great importance, for example, in monitoring the progress of the kraft pulping process. This paper describes a simple high-performance liquid chromatographic separation method with atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-APCI-MS) which was developed for the rapid quantitative analysis of these acids, mainly formed as the alkaline degradation products of feedstock carbohydrates. The fraction of carbohydrate degradation products is mainly composed of hydroxy monocarboxylic and volatile acids (formic and acetic acids) along with lesser amou…

A strategy for chromatographic and structural analysis of monosaccharide species from glycoproteins.

1996

A general strategy for the chromatographic and structural analysis of the monosaccharide species fucose (Fuc), N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc), N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), galactose (Gal), glucose (Glc), mannose (Man), N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) present in glycoproteins is described. Qualitative and quantitative aspects for the separation of these glycoprotein monosaccharides (monosaccharide species) using ligand-exchange chromatography (LEC) and high pH anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC) in combination with pulsed-amperometric detection (PAD), refractive index (RI) and ultraviolet (UV) monitoring are discussed in detail. The conditions for the acidic hydrolysis of glycoproteins and…

Properties of new asymmetrically quaternized dicationic ammonium based room-temperature ionic liquids with ether functionality

2013

Eleven asymmetrically quaternized dicationic ammonium-based room-temperature ionic liquids (DRTILs) with bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) were synthesized and characterized, along with 11 analogous dibromide precursors. Two-step synthesis was used to diquaternize tetramethyl-1,3-propanediamine and 2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl ether amines with a variety of alkyl and ether functionalized side chain groups (R1 ≠ R2). Each salt contain 1 to 3 ether groups located either in a linkage or in a side chain moieties. Structural and thermoanalytical properties, water content, and viscosity have been characterized using, for example, NMR, mass spectrometry (MS), X-ray diffraction, and thermal anal…

Viologen-based ionic liquid crystals: induction of a smectic A phase by dimerisation.

2014

The stability of thermotropic ionic liquid crystals is essentially due to micro-phase segregation between the ionic heads and the long alkyl chains. Here we show, using newly synthesized viologen dimers, that the structure of the central core is another key parameter to play with in order to tune the mesomorphic behaviour. © 2014 the Owner Societies.
