High-b-Value Diffusion-weighted MR Imaging of Benign Hepatocellular Lesions: Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis

2012

PURPOSE:To analyze the signal intensity (SI) of benign hepatocellular lesions in high-b-value diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance (MR) images and to compare the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of focal nodular hyperplasias (FNHs) with those of hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was approved by institutional review board, with waiver of informed consent. Inclusion criteria were consecutive patients with diagnosed FNH or HCA who underwent MR imaging with a DW sequence of the liver at three b values, 0, 150, and 600 sec/mm2. The final study population included 67 patients (seven men, 60 women) with 90 hepatocellular lesions (54 FN…

Two different subtypes of antimitochondrial antibodies are associated with primary biliary cirrhosis: identification and characterization by radioimm…

1987

Antimitochondrial antibodies from patients with primary biliary cirrhosis react with different mitochondrial polypeptides as demonstrated by Western blots. The IgG fractions of a patient with primary biliary cirrhosis Stage I reacting exclusively with a pair of polypeptides at 48,000 daltons (p 48) on Western blot and from a patient with Stage III primary biliary cirrhosis reacting exclusively with a single 62,000 dalton polypeptide (p 62) were labeled with 125I; two radio-immunoassays were established detecting antimitochondrial antibodies against p 62 and p 48, respectively. Autologous sera blocked the assay, but the two reference sera did not block each other. Fourteen of 40 patients wit…

Cyclooxygenase-2 expression in chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma: an immunohistochemical study

2009

UNLABELLED Hepatocarcinogenesis is a multistep process characterized by hepatocyte inflammation, regeneration, and proliferation. These changes are believed to depend on the aberrant expression of various tumor suppressor genes, oncogenes and growth factors. Several studies have shown the involvement of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), the inducible isoform of the enzymes that catalyze prostaglandin synthesis in various aspects of carcinogenesis. COX-2 has been described as being overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Using immunohistochemistry, we studied COX-2 expression in different chronic liver diseases (CLD) including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), chronic hepatitis …

Intrahepatic IgG/IgM plasma cells ratio helps in classifying autoimmune liver diseases.

2010

Abstract Background/Aim Plasma cells infiltrate in the liver is a prototype lesion of autoimmune liver diseases. The possible role of plasma cells isotyping (IgM and IgG) in the liver in the diagnostic definition of autoimmune liver disease, and particularly in variant syndromes such as autoimmune cholangitis and the primary biliary cirrhosis/autoimmune hepatitis overlap syndrome, is less defined. Methods We analysed the clinical, serological and histological features of 83 patients with autoimmune liver disease (40 primary biliary cirrhosis, 20 autoimmune hepatitis, 13 primary sclerosing cholangitis, 4 autoimmune cholangitis and 6 overlap syndrome) compared to 34 patients with chronic hepa…

Identification of a gene-pathway associated with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

2007

Background/Aims We have integrated gene expression profiling of liver biopsies of NASH patients with liver samples of a mouse model of steatohepatitis (MAT1A-KO) to identify a gene-pathway associated with NASH. Methods Affymetrix U133 Plus 2.0 microarrays were used to evaluate nine patients with NASH, six patients with steatosis, and six control subjects; Affymetrix MOE430A microarrays were used to evaluate wild-type and MAT1A-KO mice at 15 days, 1, 3, 5 and 8 months after birth. Transcriptional profiles of patients with NASH and MAT1A-KO mice were compared with those of their proficient controls. Results We identified a gene-pathway associated with NASH, that accurately distinguishes betwe…

Everyday Life, Dietary Practices, and Health Conditions of Adult PKU Patients: A Multicenter, Cross-Sectional Study

2020

Background: Only few data on dietary management of adult phenylketonuria (PKU) patients are published. Objectives: This study aimed to assess living situation, dietary practices, and health conditions of early-treated adult PKU patients. Methods: A total of 183 early-treated PKU patients ≥18 years from 8 German metabolic centers received access to an online survey, containing 91 questions on sociodemographic data, dietary habits, and health conditions. Results: 144/183 patients (66% females) completed the questionnaire. Compared with German …

Long-term Evolution of Hepatocellular Adenomas at MRI Follow-up.

2020

Background Hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) are rare benign liver tumors. Guidelines recommend continued surveillance of patients diagnosed with HCAs, but these guidelines are mainly based on small studies or expert opinion. Purpose To analyze the long-term evolution of HCAs, including solitary and multiple lesions, and to identify predictive features of progression with MRI. Materials and Methods In a retrospective study, patients diagnosed with pathologically proven solitary or multiple HCAs between January 2004 and December 2015 were included; β-catenin-mutated HCAs and HCAs with foci of malignancy were considered to be at risk for progression. MRI examinations were analyzed, and tumor evo…

The association between diabetes and cataract among 42,469 community-dwelling adults in six low- and middle-income countries

2018

Background: Cataract is a major cause of visual impairment in people with diabetes, yet a paucity of data is available in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) on this comorbidity. Thus we assessed the association between diabetes and cataract in 6 LMICs. Methods: Cross-sectional, community-based data from the Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (SAGE) was analyzed (n = 42,469 aged ≥18 years). Five years information on self-reported diagnosis of cataract was collected. Three definitions for cataract were used: (a) Self-reported diagnosis and/or past 12-month symptoms; (b) Solely self-reported diagnosis; and (c) Surgical treatment for cataract in the past five years. Diabetes was base…

Duration of active psychosis and functional outcomes in first-episode non-affective psychosis.

2018

AbstractBackground:The duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) has been associated with negative outcomes in psychosis; however, few studies have focused on the duration of active psychotic symptoms after commencing treatment (DAT). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of DUP and DAT on functional long-term outcomes (3 years) in patients with early psychosis. Methods:We evaluated the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS) at frequent intervals for 3 years after presentation to determine the DAT for 307 individuals with first-episode psychosis together with DUP and clinical variables. The functional outcomes were assessed using the Disability Assessment Scale (DAS) at th…

Depression is associated with poor control of symptoms in asthma and rhinitis: A population-based study

2019

Abstract Background Although many studies have highlighted the link between asthma/rhinitis and depression, it is still unclear which characteristics of these diseases are associated with the risk of depression. We aimed to explore the relationship between depression and asthma or rhinitis in a representative sample of the Italian general population. Methods The data were collected in GEIRD, an Italian multicenter, population-based, multicase-control study. 2227 participants (age 21–86 years, female 50%) underwent standardized interviews, skin prick and lung function tests, and were divided into cases of current asthma (n = 528), rhinitis without asthma (n = 972), and controls (n = 727).
